Extras sought for sci-fi movie
By MARK WAITE
Wanted: People with scars on their face, tattoos, piercings, beards, mohawk haircuts, age between 18 and 80 years old, and, if possible, multi-racial. "People would say that person looks terrible. To me that's beautiful," casting director Bill Marinella, who's working to recruit extras for a movie called "Hirokin," said. Film scenes will be shot beginning Feb. 22 at Dumont Dunes, 60 miles southwest of Pahrump. The well-known recreational site will serve as the post-apocalyptic world of 2029. Directors will shoot two weeks of footage at the dunes, and two weeks at El Mirage Dry Lake Bed in California, Marinella said. "The desert will actually be the city. The city will be in El Mirage Dry Lake Bed. Out here is where Hirokin lives," Marinella said. "When we do pan and scan, we can just look for miles and see nothing." In a press release, Mo-Sun Welteroth Media describes the plot: "Hirokin, a reluctant hero, is marked by a dark past who must fulfill his destiny when forced to choose between avenging the murder of his family or fighting for the freedom of a people long-abused." A trailer for the movie, which can be viewed by logging onto www.youtube.com/hirokinmovie, or www.alejosun.com, relates how in 2029 humans will be removed from warfare, to be replaced by GiGis. Intermarriage with the GiGis is punishable by death. Marinella said it's like "Mad Max" meets the "Fifth Element" meets "Star Wars." Extras will be playing in battle scenes and sand dune scenes, acting as either the Gigis, the Deacons or other groups. Potential extras can show up from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Feb. 13 at the Pahrump Nugget Casino Banquet Room. Marinella will be photographing potential extras, jotting down their height and weight and a phone number. Certain people will be designated a core group, he said. "Out of the background performers, some people have the opportunity to be upgraded to speaking roles," Marinella said. Upgrading would eliminate shipping actors out from Los Angeles for just a short speaking role, he said. "I'm going to say we're going to need 50 people a day for a week. The remaining days will be sporadic," Marinella said. "We're going to have a couple days where we're going to have a couple hundred." There will be a stipend for the actors and extras, except on days when a couple hundred will be needed on Dumont Dunes, Marinella said. In that case he plans to contribute $20 per head to a local charity. They will still receive lunch, he said. "In an ideal world we'd love to pay everybody. In this economy we only have $1 million," Marinella said. Mo-Sun Welteroth Media consists of Alejo Mo-Sun, the writer and director of Hirokin, who is described on the Web site for the production company as an "L.A. film hotshot who has worked with studios on some of the most recognizable brands in the world,." He has also worked with Greg Welteroth Sr., who founded the prolific media buying company. A press release states Mo-Sun has assembled an ace team that includes producer Matt Miller, who produced "Into The Wild" and "Milk." Braxton Pope, with the movie "Shrink" and Erich Lochner, whose credits include "Not Since You" and The Scientist." Marinella himself said he worked with movies like "Legally Blonde 2" shot in Springfield, Ill., and "The Rundown," shot in Hawaii, as well as working on music videos for the 1990s band "Creed." Recently, parts of the movie "Sum of All Fears," based on the Tom Clancy novel, were filmed at the China Ranch Date Farm not far away. The property was a substitute for the Arabian desert. In 2006, crews were filming "Lady Madeleine" in Pahrump, a movie about a terrorist plot in a brothel, that included a number of Pahrump extras. In 2007, Amir Naderi, from Alphaville Films, filmed "Vegas: Based on a True Story," partly in Pahrump. The film about a youth who saves his parents from a gambling addiction was screened last June during the CineVegas Film Festival at the Palms Resort. Anyone else who wants to participate as an extra and can't appear at the Pahrump Nugget may e-mail Marinella at Billmarinella@yahoo.com, or his local contact Cathy Leach, who can be reached at cathy.hirokin@gmail.com. |
