Mike Darby stands in front of a wall of graffiti he photographed to show the town board. He favors an aggressive abatement program and has partnered with the Nye County Sheriff's Office to help reduce graffiti and report people spray-painting buildings.

Town board member Mike Darby presented photographs at Tuesday's board meeting of more than 100 examples of graffiti taken in just a two and a half hour drive around the southern residential section of Pahrump Valley.

Darby was previously given the OK to pursue his interest in graffiti abatement and in the past two weeks he visited with officials in North Las Vegas, where their annual budget is more than $30,000.

"They started with a pencil, a camera, a paint sprayer and a phone line," said Darby.

He originally volunteered to man the program by himself, if need be. However, the Nye County Sheriff's Office recently tested high-tech chemical removal methods and is buying equipment and supplies to be used in Pahrump.

Details on how to coordinate town volunteers with sheriff personnel and whether or not a separate phone line to report taggers can be funded are still to be determined.
