By DON McDERMOTT
LAS VEGAS -- Winning three of four matches against city schools enabled the youthful Pahrump Valley volleyball team to finish 4-4 in the Las Vegas Invitational tournament last weekend. Coach Jill Harris's Lady Trojans defeated Arbor View 18-25, 27-25, 18-16 and lost 22-25, 25-9, 15-17 to Rancho in pool matches against Las Vegas opponents. Then, in Copper Bracket matches, the Trojans defeated Henderson Foothill 25-15, 25-19; Overton Moapa Valley 25-27, 25-18 and Los Angeles (Calif.) Sylmar 25-17, 25-22, to earn a first-place trophy. The tournament marked the debut of one of the youngest varsity teams in the storied history of volleyball at PVHS. Five juniors -- Taylor Ball, Alyson Kunzi, Ashley Lindgren, Natalie Glaser and Katelyn Barnes -- along with three sophomores -- Taylor McJunkin, Kayla Foster and Megan Hamrick -- are on the team. Pahrump Valley's varsity will be idle until Sept. 10, when the Lady Trojans play at home against Las Vegas Clark in a Sunset Region Southwest Class 4-A Division match (6 p.m.) On Sept. 11-12, PVHS will go to the Lake Mead Christian Academy Invitational tournament. Also in that tourney are Las Vegas Trinity, Calvary Chapel, Lund, Laughlin, Boulder City, Beatty, Indian Springs, Agassi Prep, the Lake Mead JVs and Henderson International School. The Trojans will play Calvary Chapel and Trinity on Sept. 11. Bracket play goes on all day Sept. 12. Of the 26 teams from Southern Nevada in the 40-team Las Vegas Invitational tournament, only Silverado reached the semifinals of the top bracket Saturday. That's where the Skyhawks were eliminated, 2-1 by Reno Damonte Ranch. "I'm just glad that we played well," Silverado coach Jennifer Boeddeker said. "I think the girls really pushed hard at crucial points, and we had some moments that we'll certainly work on, but I'm proud with the effort that they put out." Silverado nearly advanced to the finals but was unable to capitalize on leads of 15-14 and 18-17 in the decisive third game against Damonte Ranch, which won 18-25, 25-20, 23-21. After winning its pool, Silverado advanced to the semifinals Saturday with a 25-15, 25-22 win over Westlake (Calif.) and a 23-25, 25-22, 15-12 quarterfinal win over Green Valley.
