DON McDERMOTT On golf, Sharks and girls at PVHS
Clearing off the sports desk ... some odds and ends ... and otherwise, some disa and data ... Golf ... I quit playing the game seriously a long time ago ... the first thing to go was sort of a wild and wacky swing that sometimes hit the ball 300 yards ... or 30 feet. That got to be depressing, so I had the fore-sight (pardon the expression) to cease and desist abusing the golf ball. However, that does not stop me from being bummed out by the state of golf in the Pahrump Valley. I live just off the 18th green at Willow Creek and have, for the last seven years, watched that once terrific facility wither away. It's good that the big and impressive clubhouse, now almost 30 years old, is being used; at least it will be protected by the care and concern of the people using it. The argument over water rights, if not resolved properly and with due consideration, could further wreck the once majestic fairways not only at Willow Creek, but at the Lakeview Executive course, further down Mount Charleston Drive. Which means that two once-thriving recreation (nee golf) facilities could not only be put out of business permanently, but left useless for any kind of development. What well-meaning promoter would bother making any investment in a desert? -- Congratulations to all the people involved in the Rosemary Clarke Middle School football and volleyball programs this fall. Last Saturday, the Sharks' A-team, comprised mostly of eighth-graders, won the Southern Nevada Junior High championship with a heart-stopping 22-14 doubleovertime win against homestanding Overton Moapa Valley. RCMS finished 7-1, including a 2-0 run in the playoffs. Question: is anyone planning a post-season celebration feast for the Sharks? Should be ... they deserve it. The volleyball team swept its own invitational tournament, beating some impressive opponents, including Lake Mead Christian Academy and Pahranagat Valley Alamo. -- The Pahrump Valley girls soccer and volleyball teams are playoff-bound. The soccer girls have the most interesting challenge. Coach Greg Leseberg's team has to travel to Faith Lutheran Thursday to battle for a berth in the Nevada Class 4-A state tournament, to be played Nov. 13-14 in Reno. Three Northern League teams will complete the field. The Trojans and Crusaders played in the Southern Nevada 3-A League because of scheduling considerations. In the South, 4-A girls play their season in the winter, so PVHS and Faith were left without anybody to compete against. Kickoff Thursday is at 6 p.m. Pahrump Valley's volleyball team, despite the absence of any senior players, won 18 of 30 matches (10-5 in 4-A) and qualified for the Sunset regionals, which start Tuesday. It was an exceptional season for Jill Harris and the youthful Trojans. Wouldn't it be cool if they won at the regionals. |
