Town Buzz
By GINA B. GOOD
The following items were discussed during Tuesday evening's Pahrump Town Board meeting. Board member Frank Maurizio did not attend the meeting because of a commitment that could not be rescheduled at any other time. A quorum of four members met. * Member Mike Darby made a motion to move public comment up to the beginning of the meeting from last place, but his motion died due to lack of a second. * The board unanimously accepted a $1,500 grant to provide swimming lessons for toddlers at the town pool. No matching grant was needed to accept the funds. The money was offered by the Southern Nevada Chapter of the International Code Council (SNC-ICC). A spokesman from the organization said during the last three years, 31 toddlers under the age of 4 have drowned in pools in Southern Nevada. "That's an entire classroom of children we have lost over the last three years. One drowning is one drowning too many," the spokesman said. "If this money prevents one drowning, it's money well spent." After completion of the swim lessons, any remaining funds can be used for any activity that directly promotes pool safety, such as public education materials on pool safety or public service announcements. The only requirement for the town is to send the organization a letter indicating how many children received free swim lessons and how any remaining funds were utilized. * Town Manager Bill Kohbarger reported that the Pahrump Incorporation Advisory Board is waiting for the incorporation study to be completed and there is nothing else to report at this time. * Various town logos were displayed at the board meeting of various but very similar designs submitted by Great Basin College for public review. The logos were for information only and not part of any action item. The town is soliciting ideas for logos and slogans. |
