GAME DAY PVHS AT SIERRA VISTAThursday, 7 p.m. Who: Pahrump Valley and Las Vegas Sierra Vista High School football teams. What: Sunset Region Southwest Class 4-A Division game. Where: At Sierra Vista High School, 8100 W. Robindale (off Rainbow). Bottom Line: Sierra Vista has won once, Pahrump Valley is winless, so neither is playoff eligible. This game is for pride. The teams: Sierra Vista Mountain Lions Coach: Mark Sauve, fifth year (17-25) 2008 record: 5-6 (4-3 Southwest) 2009 to date: 1-8 (1-6 Southwest) ... Sierra Vista's win was against Western; down 28-0 in the fourth quarter, the Mountain Lions rallied for 29 points to win. Returning starters: Three offense, three defense Top players: OG/DT Andrew Ramos (Sr.); OT/DT Austin Jones (OT/DT); FB/OLB Jonathan Hall (Sr.): QB/S Kimury Miles (Sr.); RB/DB Dontrell Hall (Sr.) Outlook: The Mountain Lions had just three starters returning on each side of the ball. Sauver expected his team to be strong up front, led by three-year starter Ramos, a 5-11, 240 senior. Jones is a 6-5, 225 senior. Running the football is the speedy Dontrell Hall. The Lions operate out of the wishbone on most offensive plays and a 5-3 scheme defensively. The quarterback most of the season has been Kimurey Miles, a 6-foot, 175 senior. The Mountain Lions had hoped to be in the mix for a playoff berth but it didn't work out. Sierra Vista lost 41-28 to Bonanza, 38-14 to Spring Valley, 62-6 to Bishop Gorman, 53-7 to non-division rival Silverado, 28-0 to Clark, 60-20 to Durango and 39-0 to Desert Oasis. In another non-division game, Sierra Vista fell 41-21 to Pine View (Utah). Pahrump Valley Trojans Coach: Leo Verzilli (second season, 1-17) 2008 record: 1-9 (0-7 Southwest) 2009 to date: 0-8 (0-7 Southwest). Base offense: Wing-T Base defense: 4-4 Perspective: The Trojans trailed Western 20-0 and lost 20-14 ... Mojave led 14-0, but prevailed just 14-7 ... Clark was ahead 12-7 when a Charger defensive back intercepted a pass and returned it for a touchdown with no time left, in a 19-7 decision. Who knows? With a break here and there, Pahrump Valley might have had three wins, instead of going into Thursday's game 0-8 and riding a 17-game losing streak. The Trojans were in Clark territory five times, but managed only one touchdown; that has been typical of the team's offensive performance all season. Pahrump Valley has shown some toughness defensively, but that unit is always under pressure, a situation created by a punchless offense. The seniors: Pahrump Valley has a group of seniors who have experienced the thrill of victory only four times (in 37 games) in their prep careers. They are Eli Cline, Tyler Coyner, Tyler Lepley, Maverick Manning, Leo McCormick, Nick Murphy, Jesse Perez, Kenneth Sager, Greg Shippee, Kyle Taylor, Gary Walker, Curtis Weir and Robin Grandel. The postseason: Bishop Gorman (9-0), Durango (7-2), Desert Oasis (6-2) and Spring Valley (5-4) are the Sunset Region 4-A Southwest teams assured of a playoff berth ...In the Northwest, Legacy (9-0), Palo Verde (8-1), Cimarron-Memorial (6-2) and Cheyenne (5-4) have advanced ... Cheyenne will have a new coach for the remainder of the season ... Perryn Hale was relieved of his duties because of problems with his teaching certification ... after the 2008 season, Charles Anthony was fired as coach, after his teams were 43-15 in five seasons ... The Sunset playoffs begin Nov. 6, while the Sunrise post-season starts the following weekend. Clark 19, PVHS 7 PVHS 0 0 0 7--7 Clark 0 0 6 13--19 Third Quarter C--Riley 9 run (kick failed).
