Weekend roundup
By CHARLENE DEAN
There is wide variety on the entertainment buffet this weekend, some of it inside and some geared for the outdoorsy types. The weather is perfect and what follows will help you take advantage of the time you have. * First off - The Missoula Children's Theater will stage its last performance tomorrow in two shows, the first will be at 2 p.m. and the evening show is set for 6 p.m. in the Pahrump Valley High School auditorium. The kids have been in rehearsal all week and the talented Missoula staff will have them ready to perform their version of "Pinnochio." Tickets will be $5 per person and no discounts for this final performance. Children's theater here will change after this performance as PAC begins to work with local talent to produce "Twas the Night Before Christmas," a children's production under the direction of former PAC president Rodney Camacho. The show will be part of the Pahrump Nugget's Winter Wonderland set for Dec. 12. * The PVHS Drama Club's "Halloweeng" improv will be at 7 p.m., Thursday evening, Oct. 29 in the auditorium. Tickets are $5. * Walmart will host its annual pumpkin decorating contest and costume parade tomorrow. Contestants will be broken down into four age groups: 0-2, 6-8 and 9-12. Prizes will be given to first, second and third in each age group. The pumpkin decorating begins at 10 a.m. The costume parade and contest begins at 2 p.m. and prizes will be awarded to scariest, funniest, most creative and best of parade. Call 537-1411 and ask for Carlton McCaslin for more information. * Saddle West theater times have changed. "Where the Wild Things Are" is playing but there is only one showing at 6:30 p.m. each day. Karaoke is still on Friday around the pool and The Boltons perform in that area on Sundays. Both shows are 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. * There will be a Halloween Bash at Sheri's Valley Inn Lounge tomorrow starting at 7 p.m. Tickets are $10 per person and the door proceeds will benefit No to Abuse. There will be a costume contest where the prizes are worth it. The first-place winner cashes in for $500, second nets $250 and third place wins $100. The door prizes are a 32-inch color TV, a Play Station 3 with a game and a Blue Ray DVD player. There will be free food, drink specials, a DJ and games. You can even have your Tarot cards or your palm read. Those entering the costume contest are asked to keep the outfit decent -- no naked parts. The dress code will be enforced. * Pahrump Gunfighters will celebrate Halloween at 1 p.m., Sunday, at Dusty Flats, the Old West fascade next to the StageStop. There will be performances by the gunfighters and a Halloween costume contest with prizes and treats but no tricks. Admission is free. * Don't forget to reserve tickets for the seniors' trip to Zion National Park and Bryce Canyon. The deadline to make and pay reservations is Tuesday. The group will leave the Senior Center at 8 a.m. Oct. 31 and head for Hurricane, Utah, where the bus stops for lunch at Ted and Allen's Sports Grill. Then the trip will continue to Zion for a tour and then back to Hurricane for the night. Sunday morning the group will go to Bryce Canyon and arrive back in Pahrump around 5 or 6 p.m. The $95 price tag includes fees for the bus, the two parks, overnight accommodations with double occupancy, and lunch on Saturday. Call 751-6860 for more information and to make non-refundable reservations. * The second Iron Chef Showdown will take place starting at 4 p.m., Sunday at Charlie's Place on Bell Vista. Two "chefs" had an hour to deal with the "secret ingredient" in the last showdown two weeks ago. I understand the Spam creations were delicious. The winner of the competition picked the secret ingredient for this cook-off. The fun is free and the audience gets to consume the dishes after three judges make a final decision. The winner also wins $50 and Charlie Archer, owner of Charlie's Place, said there is already a list of people wanting to claim the title of "Iron Chef." * If a hike is more to your liking, show up at 9:30 a.m. in Tecopa at the Post Office and go with the Amargosa Conservancy group on a hike through Amargosa Canyon. The hike is free but donations are appreciated. The Amargosa Conservancy has done wonders in trying to preserve the Amargosa River and the wild lands across the hill. With grants and donations, the group has secured hundreds of acres and has plans for walking trails and signage explaining the fragile landscape to educate those who cross those paths. * Also in Tecopa and coinciding with the end of the hike, and leaving time afterwards for dinner at Pastel's Bistro, will be the Phantom Seed Literary Magazine Reading from 5 to 6 p.m., at the TBAG Gallery at Tecopa Hot Springs Resort. Brian Brown, author and owner of China Ranch Date Farm, will be featured as well as Ruth Nolan, poet and professor from College of the Desert. Phantom Seed is a magazine of "magnetic" poetry, interviews and prose all about the essence of the California desert. Copies will be available for review and for sale. The event is free and light refreshments will be served. Pastel's Bistro will open for dinner immediately following the reading. Call 760-852-4420 for more information. * The Pahrump Valley Model Railroad Club is showing off tomorrow and Sunday at its first open house. The group will take over the convention center at Nevada Treasure RV Resort with displays of all major modeling scales. There will be an operating HO scale modular layout as well. The event will be from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. tomorrow and 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday. Take the family and have a meal in the restaurant on premise. Enjoy the weekend. |
