Durango, Clark win run titles

Charity run

A 5K run to benefit the Pahrump Valley High School cross country team will be contested Saturday, starting at 9 a.m. at the Betty Ave. loop. The cost is $20, with proceeds going to the Trojans' team, coached by Andy Andersen. For information, contact Andersen at 513-5685.

LAS VEGAS -- Pahrump Valley's boys were fifth and the Lady Trojans seventh in the Sunset Region Southwest Class 4-A Division cross country championships Saturday, at Palo Verde High School.

The Trojan boys totaled 124 points, finishing well behind champion Durango's 23. PV's girls had 178 points, with Clark winning the title with 29.

For Pahrump Valley, Mason John was 15th in the 3.1-mile race, finishing in 19 minutes, 22 seconds. Jacob Naylor of Clark was the victor in 17:10.

Also for the Trojans, David Binderim was 22nd in 19:46 and Nathaniel Jacobi was 25th in 20:04. David Jacobi, Andrew White, Micah Nauck and Nick Stearns also ran for the Trojans.

In the girls race, Katie Canino paced Pahrump Valley, finishing 23rd in 25:17; Eliza Vasquez of Clark won in 21:02.

Also for the Trojans, Liz Moncrief was 33rd in 26:32 and Brittany Harris 42nd in 28:30. Tori Rock, Lupe Alcaron, Amy Velasco and Christina Tejada completed the PV lineup.

The cross country teams, coached by Andy Andersen, are now idle until Oct. 30, when the Class 4-A regionals are contested at Veterans Memorial Park in Boulder City.

The race times are 9 a.m., Sunset girls; 9:45, Sunrise girls; 10:30, Sunset boys and 11:15, Sunrise boys.

Vazquez did her part, and so did her teammates on Clark's girls cross country team Saturday.

Vazquez finished first and the Chargers placed five runners in the top 10 to win the Southwest race.

Vazquez led from the start and was never seriously challenged, winning the 3.1-mile race in 21 minutes, 2 seconds. Durango's Stacie Mitchell was second in 21:20.

The Chargers, who had five scoring runners in the chute before any other school had three, had a team score of 29. Spring Valley was second with 59, followed by Durango with 82.

In the boys meet, Durango overwhelmed the field by placing five runners in the top seven.

Led by Matt Shelton's second-place finish in 17:24, the Trailblazers had a team score of 23. Spring Valley was second with 73.

Naylor was the winner, but Durango had five of the next six finishers: Shelton, Jaime Mitchell (third, 17:29), Brandon Oxborrow (fifth, 18:20), Nick Ruiz (sixth, 18:29) and Kevin Nitta (seventh, 18:31).
