Union protests DCK's hiring
A handful of union protesters picketed at each entrance to the federal detention center job site this week, focusing on prevailing wage disputes and the hiring of non-union labor.

Liakopoulos avoids jail pending appeal
Fifth District Judge Robert Lane Monday sentenced former Nye County Commissioner Peter Liakopoulos to five years probation on his felony bribery conviction, to run concurrently with three-year probation terms for two related misdemeanors.


Meeks' lawsuit tossed by judge
Fifth District Judge John Davis last week dismissed a defamation lawsuit filed by Pahrump firefighter/paramedic C.L. Meeks against various Pahrump and Nye County officials after his 2006 arrest for failure to transport a patient.

5-cent gas tax increase postponed
An increase in the Nye County gas tax from 4 cents per gallon to 7 cents was a necessity in light of a 32 percent decline in gas tax revenues, the Nye County Regional Transportation Commission decided Monday.

Beatty sends amended open space plan to commission
BEATTY -- At its Oct. 14 meeting, the Beatty Town Advisory Board unanimously accepted the amended open space plan prepared by its committee and voted to forward it to the Nye County commissioners for their approval.
