Today, 7 p.m.

Who: Pahrump Valley and Spring Valley high school football teams.

What: Sunset Region Southwest Class 4-A Division game.

Where: At Spring Valley High School, 3750 S. Buffalo Drive, Las Vegas.

Bottom Line: Pahrump Valley is seeking to end a 14-game losing streak; the Trojans are 0-4 in the division this fall. Spring Mountain is still among the Southwest Division playoff contenders despite losing its last two starts. The Grizzlies are 3-2 in the division.

The teams:

Spring Valley

Coach: Kelly Murphy, second year (8-2)

2008 record: 8-2 (6-1 Southwest)

Returning letterwinners: 20

Returning starters: Five offense, five defense

Top players: QB/FS Anton Stallworth (Sr.); WR Brandon Lopez (Jr.); RB T.J. Allen (Sr.); FB Jeremy Geary (Sr.); OG/DT Travon Davis (Sr.); LB Roy Mares (Sr.); DE Mike Reed (Sr.); CB Khoa Nguyen (Sr.)

Key losses: RB Jacques Adams; OT/DT Nate Holloway; OG Steve Haunga

Base offensive set: Pro I

Base defensive set: 4-4

Outlook: The Grizzlies won 15 games in 2007 and 2008 and have become a playoff fixture in the Southwest.

But they'll need to find a replacement for graduated running back Adams if the team is going to repeat last year's success.

Adams was the key to the offense last season, rushing for 1,574 yards and 23 touchdowns, and averaging more than 11 yards per carry.

The athletic Stallworth is back at quarterback, and will need to take on more of the offensive load.

He passed for just 623 yards last season, but he was efficient, completing 54.4 percent of his passes. He had 11 TD passes and was intercepted just twice.

The Grizzlies allowed an average of 13.5 points last year, but the defense lost six all-league performers.

2009 to date: Grizzlies lost 35-7 to Palo Verde in a non-division game, defeated Clark 27-20, Sierra Vista 35-14 and Western 35-6, before losing 31-28 to Durango and 23-6 to Desert Oasis.

Pahrump Valley

Coach: Leo Verzilli, second season (1-14)

Base offense: Wing-T

Base defense: 4-3.

2008 record: 1-9 (0-7 division).

2009 to date: Lost 20-14 to Western, 50-0 to Bishop Gorman, 14-7 to Mojave, 39-12 to Bonanza and 49-7 to Durango.

The Trojans had allowed only 34 points in the second half this season, until Durango erupted for 43 last Friday. Critical offensive errors (three fumbles, three interceptions) disrupted their attack last week. Two of the picks were returned for touchdowns.

The playoffs: Spring Valley is fourth in the Southwest Division, one game behind Bonanza and Durango and a half-game ahead of Desert Oasis. The standings are on Page B2.

Pahrump Valley has no shot at the playoffs, so its goal is to avoid the cellar for the second straight year. Desert Oasis (PVHS Homecoming foe Oct. 16), Clark and Sierra Vista (both away) remain on the schedule.

Double forfeit

The Oct. 2 Southwest Class 4-A Division football game between Bonanza and Western that was halted by a brawl in the third quarter has been declared a double-forfeit by the Clark County School District and the Southern Nevada Officials Association.

Bonanza led Western 20-0 when a brawl started on an extra-point attempt by the Bengals. Players left their respective sidelines to join in the fracas before order was eventually restored.

The game will count as a loss for both teams in the Southwest League standings.

In addition, seven Western players and five Bonanza players have been suspended for their team's games this week. Western is at Sierra Vista on Friday. Bonanza visits Bishop Gorman.
