In the 2008 Nevada Class A state football semifinals, Pahranagat Valley Alamo roared past Coleville, Calif., 128-74, establishing several eight-man football records.

In 2009, it appears that Alamo and Coleville -- ranked 1-2 in the Pahrump Valley Times Nevada High School 1-A ratings -- are headed for another showdown, based on their performances thus far this season.

Alamo, the defending state champion and in a quest for its fourth title in five years, is 4-0 and is outscoring opponents 61.5 to 15.2 points per game.

Coleville, led by quarterback Jason Peters, has scored 94 and 80 points in games this season, enroute to a 5-0 record.

That both Alamo and Coleville will qualify for the state quarter-finals is in the area of certainty, barring some wild unforeseen circumstances. The first round of the Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association-sanctioned playoffs is Nov. 7, with the semifinals on Nov. 14 and the championship game on Nov. 21, at a northern Nevada site to be announced.

The top four teams in the South and the first- and second-place teams in the East and West divisions qualify for the first round of the state tournament.

South seeds 1 and 4 clash, with 2 and 3 the other first-round pairings. No. 1 West faces No. 2 East and No. 1 East battles No. 2 West in the upper half of the bracket.

Crossover pairings are set for the semifinals, with No. 1 South facing No. 2 East/West and No. 1 East/West to take on South 2.

South 3-A teams (Boulder City, Overton Moapa Valley and Mesquite Virgin Valley) do not play league games until the final three weeks of the season.

On Oct. 16, Boulder City battles Virgin Valley; on Oct. 23, it's Virgin Valley vs. Boulder City, and on Oct. 29, Moapa Valley and Virgin Valley collide.

The 3-A playoffs are all at the state level. On Nov. 7, North seeds 1 and 4, along with 2 and 3, clash in first-round games, with the Southern regular-season champion earning a bye and South 2 and 3 tangling in an elimination game.

On Nov. 14, the pairings are North 1 vs. South 2 at a northern field and South 1 vs. North 2 down south.

The championship game is Nov. 21 at a northern site.

In the 3-A ratings this week, unbeaten Dayton is No. 1, with Boulder City at No. 4.

In Class 2-A, Yerington Silver State Academy/Rite of Passage is ranked No. 1, with Las Vegas Agassi Prep second.

The 4-A Top 10 is led by Las Vegas Palo Verde, with Bishop Gorman No. 2 and Reno North Valleys at No. 3. Each is undefeated in five games.
