POWDER PUFF FOOTBALL THRILLER Soccer girls win in three OT
By DON McDERMOTT
If the Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association ever wants to add another girls sport, let it be flag football. Saturday, another Pahrump Valley High School fall tradition, the Powder Puff Game was played at the stadium, matching the Lady Trojans' soccer team against a combined squad of cheerleaders and dance team members. That the soccer team won 8-0 in three overtimes was almost incidental to the excitement generated by the teams and a good crowd in stands, who were led in cheers by a group of 11 boys who were the cheerleaders for both teams. Melissa Ewing, the soccer team's leading scorer during the regular fall season, ran three yards for the touchdown and added the two-point conversion to give the booters an 8-0 lead. Defensive plays by Amber Dove and Brandi Monje shut down the Cheer-Dance team's final offensive series to preserve the lead. In regulation, the soccer girls had a touchdown nullified by a penalty in the final minute and another infraction wiped out another scoring threat by the booters in the first overtime.
