Fran's Star Ranch brothel right outside of Beatty was destroyed by fire.

Fran York, the owner, said she believed the fire was accidental. No one was hurt. She had operated the brothel for eight years; it was known as Vicki's prior to that.

"I understand when it started," said Assistant Fire Chief Jimmy Weeks, "everyone ran out of the place, opening doors and windows which created a draft. It's an old building and it burned fast."

The MX missile project was to be discussed at a meeting of a group organized to oversee the interests of Nye and several other counties.

The idea was to shoot anti-missile missiles around the countryside on railroad cars so the Russians couldn't pin them down and neutralize them in the event they attacked the U.S.

In a United Press International article, Ellen Z. Woods, a leader of the recall movement, said "a mistake was made" in electing Wines originally. Woods had voted for Wines at the time. "Now, we're trying to save Nye County from itself."

Superintendent Joaquin Johnson said he was looking at other angles to fund the $3 million school construction plan since the bond issue for it was rejected by voters.

The recent sale of the majority of stock in Bond Gold is not related to the layoffs at the company's Bullfrog gold mine at Beatty, reported Publisher Rich Thurlow.

"Right now it's business as usual at Beatty," said General Manager Jack Bingham. "I don't anticipate any changes."

Continuing problems with the stench at the new county complex might be solved.

The first step would be flushing the animal control septic system with bleach, the second involved installing what is called a P-trap on the exterior sewer line.

"Since the installation of the P-trap on the main line," the PVT reported, "the bubbling has ceased inside the building."

A sign on the Sheriff's Office window warned it was "Closed due to hazardous gases."

A number of employees had been forced to evacuate the building after the stench made them ill.
