Back Then
30 years ago this week The Nye County school bond proposal went right down the tubes as voters put the kibosh on it by a 617-538 vote. Turnout was reported as low throughout the county, Pahrump, which would have gained a new grade school and five new rooms at the high school, was for the plan, and Amargosa Valley, which stood to acquire four new grade school classrooms, was just barely in favor, but Beatty, Gabbs, Tonopah and Round Mountain lined up solidly against it the bond. The petition calling for the recall of Sheriff Joni Wines was submitted with 1,119 signatures, or close to 300 over the required number. More than 50 members of the sheriff's department had left since Wines took office at the beginning of the year. Calvada was proclaiming itself the "new heart of the Pahrump Valley." After a fire in the garbage truck, local collector Johnny Kruse asked that people not burn trash after they put it in the barrels, as it can smolder for days and then flare up when collected. 20 years ago Terrible Herbst was advertising gas at 99.9 cents a gallon for unleaded. Cigarettes were selling for $1.40 a pack. The BLM was taking some heat after it shut down the town dump to protect the desert tortoise. Angel Calhoun, who owned Calhoun Sand and Gravel, said she hadn't heard anything from BLM and would have to go look for a job, "and we'll try to figure out what to do." About 70 senior citizens voted to incorporate. The group wanted to look for new sites for the senior center. Dissatisfied with the slow speed of responses from District Attorney Phil Dunleavy's office, the town board planned to discuss further its vote to hire its own attorney. The Vegas Lites Revue at Saddle West was the first live revue performed in Pahrump. About 400 men and women attended. 10 years ago The town voted to hire 14 temporary ambulance employees despite the likelihood of a major shortfall in revenue for the Pahrump Valley Fire-Rescue Service. But Board member Tim Leavitt warned them that "their newfound permanent status might also be temporary." At the same time, because of the financial concerns on the horizon, the board decided to postpone any work on the fairground -- a postponement that apparently continues to this day. Support grew for sheriff's department Sgt. Ed Howard, who was transferred from the detective division to animal control after he testified during a preliminary hearing in the Ted Binion case. Now the Nevada chapter of the Fraternal Order of Police also came out in favor of the proposed recall of Sheriff Wade Lieseke. The RPC assured residents it would keep its eye on traffic issues in considering its items for discussion. Veterinarian James Reilly said he intends to promote efforts to guarantee pet birth control through spaying and neutering. Nellis AFB agreed to keep an eye on the flight levels of special operations helicopters over Pahrump. Among other complaints, Cheryl Little said four helicopters were flying low enough for her to read their numbers. |
