Janet Ruth Russell Cavanaugh

Janet R. Cavanaugh, 85, died from complications of Alzheimer's disease in St. Paul, Minn.

She was born in Los Angeles, Calif., to Warren Hastings Hamilton and Nora (Dawson) Kemp, and was a sister to John E. Hamilton.

She was a resident of Pahrump for 23 years.

Janet grew up in the Alhambra area of Los Angeles and graduated from San Marino Hall in South Pasadena in 1941.

After high school, she attended Los Angeles City College and graduated in 1947.

She was a member of the Los Angeles Judo Club, Seinan dojo and earned her third degree, brown belt, and participated in tournaments in Manzanar, Calif., along with her brother, John, and instructor, Jack Sergel.

Janet was married in July of 1948 at Lake Tahoe, to her first husband, Gilbert W. Russell. (d.1961).

She was widowed at the young age of 38, but courageously raised both of her children working as a waitress.

A visionary woman, she taught herself Spanish, while saving all her tips in giant restaurant mayonnaise jars.

When the last child graduated from high school, she cashed it all in -- yes it took a truck to get it to the bank -- and with that nest egg she began to travel around the world. Her favorite places were Mexico and Spain.

While living for several months on the Island of Minorca, Spain, she met her second husband, John H. Cavanaugh, retired Army warrant officer (d.1986).

In 1981, they bought land in Pahrump, in the Bumarch Estates area, where Janet designed, and was the general contractor for her dream home, an authentic adobe house.

Janet was active in the life of Pahrump as a dedicated volunteer for the Friends of the Library and for the Republican Women's group, as well as a member of Moose Lodge No. 808 until her illness forced her to move to Minnesota with her daughter in 2004.

Leaving Pahrump and her little adobe house was one of the saddest moments of her life. She missed her friends very much and always called Pahrump her "home."

Janet is survived by daughter Janet R. (John) Geisler of Minnesota; son, Gilbert W. (Kathy) Russell of Texas; stepson Dennis (Jane) Russell of Arizona and step-daughter Pam (Bob) Sibley, of California; nieces Julie D. (Steve) Webber and Susan L. Hamilton of California.; six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren, as well as the Cavanaugh grandchildren: (Landry) Tanya Harrison (Jerry) of Pahrump, Lance, Christian, John and James.

Per Janet's request, there will not be a funeral service. Instead, the family plans a family ceremony at Inglewood Cemetery, Inglewood, Calif. (05/24/2009)
