Gorman, Centennial win state titles

Las Vegas Bishop Gorman outscored three Nevada Class 4-A baseball tournament opponents 13-2, as the Gaels claimed their fourth consecutive state championship.

The Gaels, 40-4 and winners 39 of their last 40 starts, defeated Cimarron-Memorial 3-1 in the title game, played at the College of Southern Nevada in Henderson Saturday.

In other baseball championship finals:

* Mesquite Virgin Valley came out of the losers' bracket to defeat Las Vegas Faith Lutheran 13-1 and 2-1 to win the 3-A title for the second straight season. The tournament was played at Faith Lutheran.

* In Class 2-A at Mountain View Christian School in Las Vegas, Needles, Calif., averaged 10 runs per game to win the title. The Mustangs defeated Zephyr Cove Whittell 12-2 in the finals, after beating Pershing County Lovelock 8-5 and Whittell 10-0.

* Lake Mead Christian Academy defeated Carlin 7-2 in the 1-A title showdown at Arbor View High School.

Las Vegas Centennial (30-10) defeated Sparks Reed 7-4 in 11 innings to win the 4-A fast-pitch softball state title, at Majestic Park. Centennial bounced back from a 7-1 loss to Reed (37-7) to grab the crown.

* In Class 3-A, Fernley battled through the losers bracket to win its third straight state championship, defeating Boulder City 3-2 and 9-1 Saturday, at Faith Lutheran.

* Needles crushed Pershing County Lovelock 12-2 in the 2-A championship game, at Mountain View Christian.

* Carlin edged Pahranagat Valley 5-4 in eight innings to win the 1-A crown. The Railroaders started their title drive with a 20-5 rout of Lake Mead Christian Academy.
