Moapa refuge closing slated

LAS VEGAS -- The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is closing the Moapa Valley National Wildlife Refuge through the summer.

Spokesman Dan Balduini says the decision was driven by lack of staff. The service has relied on volunteers to staff the refuge, but not enough volunteers are available during the hot summer months when visitor numbers also drop.

The 117-acre refuge is 60 miles northeast of Las Vegas. It is a sanctuary for the Moapa dace, a federally protected, endangered fish.

The refuge will reopen on Saturdays in the fall.
