Memorial Day service There will be a Memorial Day service to honor Cmdr. Thomas L. MacAdam, US. Navy Chaplain Corps, Ret., at 9:30 a.m., May 25 at the G.G. Sweet Veterans Memorial Park at Gamebird Road and Money Street. MacAdams served in the Navy from 1969 to 1989, including tours with the Fleet Marine Force in Vietnam. He was ordained in 1958 and moved to Pahrump in 1997. He served as pastor of Saved by Grace Lutheran Church from Jan. 1, 2001, until he retired. The service is open to the public. Food drive Nye County Emergency Services will hold a food drive and hand out information on disaster preparedness 8 a.m. to noon, May 23 in the parking lot of Smith's Food and Drug. Items needed include peanut butter, jellies, beans, rice, pastas and canned goods such as meat, fruit and vegetables. Call 751-4279 for more information. O-Mok-See The Rising Star Equestrian Association, an NPO, will hold another O-Mok-See scheduled for May 30 in Pahrump. The cost will be $10 per entry for RSEA members and $25 for non-members. Mental health open house Pahrump Mental Health Center will celebrate Mental Health Month with an open house from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., May 29 at the center, 240 Humahuaca St. Staff will be available for mental health screenings, to answer questions and provide an overview of the facility. Help with Veterans claims The Disabled American Veterans service officer, Reggie Knight, has relocated his offices to Desert View Hospital, 360 S. Lola Lane. The office is open on Wednesdays only. No appointment is necessary. Call 910-9345 for more information. Castlemania Mrs. Cooper's fifth graders will sponsor Castlemania 2-3 p.m. May 27 in the J.G. Johnson Elementary School gymnasium. Everyone is welcome to attend. School volunteer summer hours The Nye County School District Volunteer Coordinator Office will be open 9 a.m. to noon, Tuesdays and Thursdays only through the summer break. CMA meets The Nevada Country Music Association, Nye County chapter will hold a general meeting at 6 p.m. May 26 at the StageStop Lounge and Casino, 100 Stagecoach Road. Volunteers are asked to give five to 10 hours per week. Applications are available at the main circulation desk. * The Pahrump Community Library is looking for adult literacy tutors. There are students waiting. Adults interested in getting help with reading skills, call 727-5930, ext. 19. The service is free. Employment computer class Nye County Health and Human Services, through a block grant, will join JobConnect and GBC from 8 a.m. to noon and 1 to 5 p.m., May 28, for a free one-day computer training class for eligible individuals seeking employment who need computer skills to create cover letters and resumes, use Internet browsers and e-mail, perform job searches and set up job search accounts. Seating is limited to 20. Applications must be completed, required documents provided and applicant deemed eligible to take the class. Call 751-7095 to determine necessary documents and apply. Library summer reading The Pahrump Community Library Summer Reading Club is coming soon. Signup now for "Be Creative at Your Library," June 16-July 22. A kick-off presentation with storyteller Glenda Bonin, "Just imagine: Stories for the fun of it," will be 10 a.m. June 16. Regular classes will begin the following week: ages 4-5, 9-10 a.m., Wednesday; ages 6-11, 1-2:15 p.m., Tuesdays or 10:30-11:45 a.m., Wednesdays; fifth grade and up, 2:30-3:30 p.m., Tuesdays. Vote for Pahrump The Pahrump Valley Chamber of Commerce has an opportunity to have Pahrump featured in an upcoming issue of Nevada Magazine which is published by the Nevada Commission on Tourism. The series will be "Touring Around Nevada," and will feature only rural communities. The article will also be featured in the online version of the magazine called "Turning Book."
