Town square needs to be 'sold to the people'

BEATTY -- During public comment at the last town board meeting, Bobby Revert said he had asked for an agenda item for discussion of work on the town square park. It had not been put on the agenda, however, because no written agenda request was filed, and board member Bert Bertram had said he wanted it on the agenda of the following meeting.

Revert was concerned that work had not progressed on the park and said, although his family didn't really want the land back, "If you don't want it, give it back."

Lasorsa said, "Unfortunately there is a lot of opposition to the town square" and that "we need to sell it to the people."

The most urgent need, according to Lasorsa and Bertram, is to establish a perimeter for the park because it is being used for the parking of trucks and campers, and had even been used by itinerant fruit vendors.

David Spicer has proposed a fence consisting of stone columns, bollards and chain. Revert also suggested a wrought-iron fence might be appropriate.

Marchand suggested a contest among landscape architects for the design of the park might be a good idea. Possible designs have already been developed, partly through the work of UNLV students.

Also during public comment, Joannie Jarvis said the park benches and trash receptacles, which are now installed, are very nice.

She complained, however, about the condition of Owens Trailer Park. Partial demolition of mobile homes at the park, she said, has resulted in loose material, such as plywood and insulation, being scattered into the road and onto other people's property.

Lasorsa said the town had been working with the district attorney's office on the problem.
