Seniors off to Zion
By CHARLENE DEAN
The Pahrump Senior Center is once again sponsoring a day trip, this time to Zion National Park. Passengers will be gone for 12 hours, four of them in the national park located in Springdale, Utah. The plan is to leave the Senior Center at 7 a.m. June 6 in a luxury coach equipped with a restroom, reclining seats and DVD screens. Everyone taking the trip will be treated to pastry and coffee before the trip gets under way. Two movies are scheduled to help pass the time. A variety of Dean Martin clips will be shown on the way up to the park and "Marley and Me," a family film, will be shown on the way back. Stops for munchies will be made in Mesquite. A luncheon is planned for Ted and Allen's Sports Grill when the bus gets to Springdale, before riders embark for a tour of the park. On the menu is ham or broiled chicken, mashed potatoes and gravy, homemade soup, sweet potatoes and salad with all the fixin's. Beverages, excluding alcohol, are included with lunch. Don McIntosh, the program director said he used to give tours at Zion National Park about seven or eight years ago. "It's an amazing place," he said. "If you've ever been to the Grand Canyon, it's just as awesome, only at the Grand Canyon you're standing on the rim looking down. At Zion, you're standing on the canyon floor looking up." The tour is planned using one of the park's shuttles and a ranger who will narrate the scenic trip through the canyon. There are lookout points where passengers may get out of the shuttle and walk around on the many footpaths. "The gardens are beautiful and there's bighorn sheep there," said McIntosh. "The thing that amazes me most is watching the rock climbers. "You'll be looking up and see this tiny speck far above the canyon floor and realize it's someone rock climbing on sheer cliffs. Then someone will say, 'Yeah, they've been up there for two days.' And you realize those people are sleeping -- hanging off those cliffs." There are also footpaths at the main visitors' center where individuals may get information and brochures. The trip is open to anyone who wants to go, including adults wanting to take their children. Tickets are $55 per person and include park entrance fees, lunch, pastry and coffee at the Senior Center before the bus leaves for Utah. The bus should arrive back at the Senior Center by 7 p.m. that evening. Reservations must be made and paid by June 4. Call 751-6860 and ask for Don McIntosh for more information. |
