Some teachers may be rehired
Everyone in the filled-to-capacity Pahrump Nye County School District office Wednesday night anxiously waited to hear what school jobs would be reinstated, using the additional $2.07 million allocated to the district by the state Legislature last week.

Pahrump population increases
Pahrump reversed a year of population losses, gaining 1,031 residents in the first quarter of 2009, according to estimates by the Nye County Planning Department released Wednesday -- a 2.8 percent gain.


Deadline approaching in amnesty program
Time is running out for people with outstanding misdemeanor and traffic tickets in justice court to pay the fines without the additional fees under a spring amnesty program, after which bailiffs will begin aggressively seeking out scofflaws.

Tom Gibson, the public defender representing former Nye County Commissioner Peter Liakopoulos, filed a motion for a continuance in his trial, claiming he needs time to investigate misconduct in the Nye County Sheriff's Office investigation.

Salary reductions could save teaching jobs
When asked at the May 20 public hearing if reductions in pay, reduction of days worked and step increases for longevity would be considered to bring back more teachers, Nye County School District Superintendent Rob Roberts said those issues are up to the unions involved, as teachers and other personnel had negotiated contracts with the district.

Utilities Inc. will file application for rate hearings in December
Utilities Inc. of Central Nevada plans to apply for a new rate hike in December, but UICN Vice-President of Operations Paul Burris said at the semi-annual customer's informational meeting last week, he doesn't expect any rate increase to be "astronomical."

The ghost town of Gold Point, approximately an hour north of Beatty, will not be a ghost town this weekend when the eighth annual Memorial Daze celebration starts today.

Champion poodle breeder given conditional use permit

Town square needs to be 'sold to the people'
BEATTY -- During public comment at the last town board meeting, Bobby Revert said he had asked for an agenda item for discussion of work on the town square park. It had not been put on the agenda, however, because no written agenda request was filed, and board member Bert Bertram had said he wanted it on the agenda of the following meeting.

The annual Memorial Day ceremony at Chief Tecopa Cemetery will have an added feature this year, the Pahrump Genealogical Society and the Daughters of the American Revolution have prepared books with information on all 171 veterans interred at the cemetery.
