LAS VEGAS -- In one of the fastest 800-meter runs in Sunset Class 4-A Region girls track, Ashley Lindgren, a Pahrump Valley High School sophomore, was right in the middle of the chase.

Lindgren was third in a school-record 2:21.85 in the race won by Ansherae DeVine of Western in 2:18.89. Devine threatened her own regional record of 2:16.12 (set in 2008), as her late kick disposed of Cheyenne's J'Myah White, the 1600-meter champion who was second in 2:21.10.

Pahrump Valley's McKenzie Dean was fifth, passing two runners in the final 10 meters and finishing in 2:27.85.

Lindgren was the only PVHS athlete to qualify for the state championships, to be contested Friday and Saturday at Del Sol, which hosted the three-day regionals.

Previously, Alex Anderson qualified in the triple jump, Nick Stearns in the pole vault and Ashley Rencher in the shot put and discus.

Lindgren did not qualify in the 400, finishing seventh in 0:59.77 in a race won by Centennial's Ashley Mosley in 0:55.24, a regional record.

Dean was fourth in the 1600, running her final event at that distance in 5:33.02. Dean was in contention throughout the first three laps, but White's pace -- a win in 5:20.37 -- knocked out the PVHS senior.

Freshman Melissa Ewing and sophomore Stevie McElheny were fifth and sixth, respectively, in the 100-meter hurdles. Stearns was seventh in the 110 hurdles and fifth in the 300 hurdles.

Four freshmen -- Ewing, Regan VanEngen, Kayla Foster and Taylor McJunkin -- were sixth in the 4x100-meter relay in 0:53.3; McElheny, McJunkin, Dean and Lindgren were sixth in the 4x400 in 4:13.01.
