OVERTON -- When it was reported in some Sunday publications that Beatty won the Southern Nevada Class A girls regional track championship, that information was relegated to one line at the end of a roundup story.

Well, here's the facts, sports fans.

For the first time since 1993, a Beatty High School girls track team won a regional championship, Saturday, at Moapa Valley High School here.

The Lady Hornets, coached by Jerry Adcox, accumulated 150 points, with 17 girls participating. There were Emily Salisbury and Markie Cohan, along with Britney Caskey, Darina Clark, Jessica Cottrill, Heather Dunsterville, Trista Eastman, Sara Gray, Ana Martinez, Maria Martinez, Lissette Mendez, Liz Moen, Amanda Revert, Kaci Schroeder, Lispeth Thompson, Darian Venezio, Cristal Williams and Meesha Worden.

Maria Martinez, Venezio, Gray and Ana Martinez won the 4x800-meter relay in a school-record 12:32:47, earning 10 points, unopposed.

In the pole vault, Adcox entered four girls -- Emily Salisbury and Markie Cohan, as well as Maria Martinez and Worden. No other team had a participant.

On her first attempt, Salisbury cleared the 5-foot starting height -- and earned another 10 points without opposition.

The Lady Hornets will compete in the state meet at Del Sol High School in Las Vegas Friday and Saturday, starting at 3 p.m. each day.

Beatty's boys scored 102 points and finished second to Spring Mountain's talented team.

Dominic Jones set two league meet records and won two other events to carry Spring Mountain to the title.

Jones set records in the 100 (11.17 seconds) and 200 meters (22.63). He also won the long jump (20 feet, 11 inches) and was a member of the Eagles' 400 relay team, which won in a meet-record 45.88.

Jones helped Spring Mountain score 241 points.
