Lindemann in state golf tourney
By DON McDERMOTT
For the third consecutive year, Shane Lindemann is playing in the Nevada State Golf Championships. The Pahrump Valley High School junior is represetning the Trojans in the Class 4-A tournament, which began today and concludes Thursday at the Red Hawk Lakes course in Sparks. Lindemann shot 80-74--154 in the Sunset Regionals last week to qualify for the state tournament, to be played on a par 72, 6,996-yard course located at Wingfield Springs in Sparks. Playing in a threesome with Reno junior Matt Bushman and Las Vegas Chaparral senior Rick Carillo, Lindemann's tee-time today is 1 p.m. The tournament began at 11 a.m. today and will start at 8 a.m. Thursday. Lindemann was the lone PVHS player in the 2007 Class 3-A state tournament, shooting 96-102--198 to finish 38th at Somersett Country Club in Reno. In 2008, he was on a Trojans' team that finished second to Truckee, Calif., in the 3-A state tourney contested at The Palms in Mesquite; Lindemann shot 84-82--166 for the Trojans, who finished six strokes behind the Wolverines. Pahrump Valley shot itself out of team contention in the Sunset regionals in the first round played Wednesday at The Badlands. The Trojans totaled 427, 32 strokes behind Palo Verde and 24 behind Centennial. While Lindemann had 80 and Daniel Shimakawa added 81, Dorian Patel and Elliott Owens each shot 87s. Josh Spradlin had 92 and Ryan Hammar 97. On the second day, played at Mountain Falls in Pahrump, Owens had 77 (164), Shimakawa 78 (159) and Patel 79 (166) to go with Lindemann's 74. Unfortunately for the Trojans, they did not have a fifth team member qualify as an individual to play on the second day. "On the final hole, as a team, we went 23 over par and knocked us out of coming back today," said Bob Hopkins, the Trojans coach. * Zane Thomas, a freshman at Arbor View, followed his 3-over-par 75 at Badlands with a 4-under 68 Thursday to clinch the Sunset individual title with a one-under par 143. "It's pretty special," said Thomas, who had six birdies. "It was a tough course out there and I feel like I played pretty well. I thought it was possible, but I knew I had to play really well to beat all the competition out here." Palo Verde won its third consecutive team title with a 776, edging Centennial (782) for the second straight season. Bonanza (815) was third. Kyle Melchiorre led Palo Verde with a 153. He was followed by teammates Nick Roman (153), Thanapon Iamsaard (154), Josh Lo Manto (160) and Errek McClellan (160). Jake Barton carded a 155 to lead Centennial, followed by Greg Kerber (156), James Newman (157), Brad Rowland (160) and Zach Chyz (161). Other individuals from nonqualifying teams to reach state were Thomas, Bonanza's Yongsoo Shin (151), Bishop Gorman's Connor Morris (154) and Durango's Aaron Page (158). -- The Web site, www.nevadapreps, contributed to this story.
