Fiery crash reported, nothing discovered

Reports of a possible helicopter crash Monday in the area of Gamebird Road and Winchester Avenue hailed Pahrump Valley Fire-Rescue Services to the scene at approximately 9:30 p.m., but nothing was found.

Still, the search was pursued for close to two hours, due to phone calls from all around the valley.

"We made contact with the FAA and Mercy Air," said Fire Chief Scott Lewis, who said Mercy Air 21 had just left the Pahrump area. "We were able to reach them and determine that all their personnel were accounted for."

On the flight back to Pahrump, Mercy Air diverted to help with the search, using night-vision goggles to comb the area.

Lewis said the helicopter crew was vital to the search as if a burning object had gone down, the night vision goggles could have spotted it from miles away. The goggles also see definition on the terrain, but Tuesday night there was nothing to see but a few large boulders.

Lewis set up a large perimeter around the search area, with personnel strategically located as far away as the grounds of Our Lady of the Valley Roman Catholic Church near the junction of Gamebird Road and Pahrump Valley Blvd.

What did residents see that caused them to call 911? Did something go Pahrump in the night?
