The annual Pahrump Town Cleanup attracted 143 volunteers who cleaned up 54 miles of the 98 miles targeted, Patricia Cox said in a report delivered to the Pahrump Town Board Tuesday.

"We normally get 300 to 400 people. However, due to so many events going on the same weekend, we were short a few," Cox said.

The annual Earth Day event, the Valley Electric Association annual meeting in Fish Lake Valley and the Biz Expo were some of the other events competing for attention that weekend.

The volunteers collected 15.17 tons of trash in five hours.

A group of homeowners on the south side of Pahrump won first prize for the most trash collected. They collected two-ton dumpsters full of garbage cleaning the desert in the vicinity of the old shooting range near Thorne Drive and Vicki Ann Drive.

The second place prize went to the Rotary Club of Pahrump Valley for the most bags of trash, 61, and the largest group of volunteers, 21.

The third place prize was collected by the Artesia Owners Association for the most mileage cleaned, six miles.

The youngest volunteers were two children, Zack and Zoey King, respectively 4 and 6 years old.

Cox thanked the Nevada Department of Transportation for donating bags and vests; Pahrump Valley Disposal owners John and Damon Shea for coordinating collection routes, signing up organizations and picking up the bags; John Pawlak for getting the Pahrump Town Board to approve the funds; Pahrump Valley Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Lucy Ivins for taking the phone calls; Dean and Carol Black, for handing out water and bags for the volunteers along the routes; Bill Garlough for putting out safety signs and picking up donations; and Albertson's Supermarket for donating the water.

Cox reported $1,292 was spent on the event, mostly for advertising in the local media.
