Sign-ups open

Registration is now open for the 2009 Pop Warner football season.

Players 5 to 7 years old and weighing 75 pounds or less play for one team; the second team is for youth 8 to 11 who weigh 105 pounds or less.

The age is as of July 31, 2009. The cost of registration is $180. Registration forms can be picked up, and completed, at Worden's Farmers Insurance Agency, 2210 E. Commercial Road (off Highway 160 at the Nevada State Bank).

Office hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.

The Pahrump Pop Warner teams play in the Southern Nevada Conference. The Rush is in the Pee-Wee Division (ages 8 to 11) and will be coached by Robert Worden. The Sharks of the tiny-mite division (ages 5 to 7) will be coached by Damon Plant.

Teams are limited to 35 players, so early registration is encouraged. Practice will begin Aug. 3.

For more information, contact Worden at 1-775-910-9624 or e-mail rworden@farmersagent.com.

Football talk

The Pahrump Valley football team, its parents and fans, will participate in a special meeting Monday in the high school gym.

For the second straight year, coach Leo Verzilli will lead the meeting. He was named the Trojans' coach in 2008, when PVHS entered the Sunset Region Southwest Class 4-A Division.

The session will begin at 7 p.m., with everyone involved in football urged to attend.

Farmers Cup

The Farmers Cup Adult-Junior Golf Series will be played June 14, July 12 and Aug. 9.

Robert Worden, the series director, said information on the event can be found by e-mailing him at rworden@farmersagent.com, or by calling 1-775-910-9624.

The tournament format calls for an adult and a junior player to form a team for medal play. Players 6-8 and 9-11 will play nine-hole matches, while players 12-14 and 15-18 will compete in 18-hole rounds.

The costs are $20 for all junior players; $25 for adults playing with a 6-8 or 9-11 golfer and $35 for adults playing in an 18-hole match.

Pre-registration will be required before each match, with the deadlines June 10 for the first round, July 8 for the second, and Aug. 5 for the finale. All matches will be played at Mountain Falls.

First-place medals will be awarded in each division. First-, second- and third-place teams in each age division will receive medals.

Football camp

An instructional camp for youth football players ages 5-11 will be held July 6-10 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Pahrump Valley High School field.

The camp will provide basic football skills instruction, fun football contests and motivational talks designed to prepare players for the upcoming Pop Warner season.

The cost of the camp is $40 and is due at registration on the first day of camp. Only cash will be accepted.

The camp will be hosted by Pahrump Pop Warner coaches and all proceeds will benefit the teams.
