LaVerne Barnes

LaVerne Barnes passed away April 18, 2009.

She was born Sept. 6, 1927, and raised in Johnstown, Pa.

After graduating from the local high school in 1945, she attended the Windber Hospital School of Nursing and graduated in September of 1948.

The following month she married Walter Miller. Walter passed away due to a medical condition that affected his heart.

In 1958, LaVerne joined the Air Force Reserve Nurse Corps as a 1st Lieutenant. She was stationed at Myrtle Beach AFB until 1960.

She then moved to Los Angeles, Calif., where she met Paul Barnes. They were married in September of 1965, and had their only child, Phillip, in January 1968.

Later that year LaVerne was honorably discharged from the Air Force as a Captain.

Paul, LaVerne and Phillip lived in Los Angeles for many years.

After both Paul and LaVerne retired, they moved to Pahrump and a few years later Phillip moved here, too, with his wife and two children.

She is survived by her husband, Paul Barnes, and her son, Phillip Barnes.

Everyone who knew LaVerne has nothing but fond memories of her. She was a sweet and wonderful woman, and is greatly missed by all whose lives she touched. (04/18/2009)
