LAS VEGAS -- Ashley Rencher's best event is the shot put, but Wednesday, on the first day of the Sunset Region Class 4-A Track and Field championships, the Pahrump Valley senior came close to pulling out a major upset.

In the finals of the discus throw at Del Sol High School here, Rencher finished just 26 inches behind favorite Avione Allgood of Legacy. In the smothering heat, Rencher cut loose with a heave of 126 feet9 inches.

Allgood, a freshman sensation, won with an effort of 128-11. No one else in the meet was within 15 feet of the two leaders.

Nick Stearns and Alex Anderson put on strong performances as well for the Trojans in the pole vault and triple jump finals, respectively.

Stearns was third in the pole vault at 11 feet, 3 inches; Christian Bulloch of Bonanza cleared 12 feet to win.

In the triple jump, Anderson was second at 44-3 1/2; Sidney Hodge of Palo Verde won at 44-9 1/4.

Hodge and his Palo Verde teammates already have made themselves tough to catch at the Sunset Region boys track meet.

Hodge helped the Panthers score 47 points. Centennial, led by Nick Hartle's win in the 3,200 meters in 10 minutes, 4.59 seconds, is second with 21 points. Pahrump Valley's boys are third with 15 points.

In the Sunset girls meet, Centennial's Karli Johonnot won the high jump (5-3) and LaTangie Richard took the long jump (16-11) as the Bulldogs lead with 39 points.

Shadow Ridge won the 3,200 relay (9:57.3). Legacy's Avione Allgood took the discus (128-11).

In the Sunrise Region meet, Julius Kim won the 3,200 in 9:59.35 and Bryann Artmann took the pole vault (15-1) to help Green Valley's boys score 44 points. Other winners in the finals were Silverado's Keenan Graham (shot put, 49-4) and Eldorado's Charles White (triple jump, 49-0).

In the girls meet, Krystal Wharton of Valley won the long jump (16-9) to help Valley tie Foothill for the lead with 19 points. Pahrump Valley is sixth with eight points.
