Letters to the Editor
Science fair a success Floyd Elementary would like to thank the following companies for help making the science fair a success: Threadz, Sonic, Domino's, Papa John's, Quiznos, McDonald's, and Sandbaggers. A special thank you to our judge from RCMS, Richard Prost. JILLYAN BEAUPARLANT How about us? After reading the Las Vegas news, I was shocked to see that ACORN was being investigated by the attorney general and the Nevada secretary of state for possible violations of voting laws. Pahrump (Nye County) has been complaining to both these agencies about possible vote irregularities for a long time, but nothing has ever been done. In Nye County, the votes are counted by the Nye County clerk, and no independent people are allowed to get close enough to see any names or numbers. The absentee ballots are done the same way, which has caused many people to question the election results. The Nye County clerk refuses to allow independent vote count monitors, even when the Nye County clerk is on the ballot for re-election. This constitutes a secret vote count and, at the present time, there is a federal lawsuit in the courts for a violation of our civil rights, because Nye County voters are not allowed a transparent and fair election. Even though our population is only approximately 40,000 people, we are still citizens, veterans and above all, proud Americans who demand something be done to bring back the respect and dignity to our election process here in Nye County. Could you imagine if a casino held drawings for a big prize and picked the winning ticket in a backroom where nobody was allowed to see anything? The people would be outraged and would never believe it was done fairly. We don't expect miracles in Nye County but we do expect honesty and transparency in our elections. I hope the attorney general and the secretary of state look into our last election results, because the residents of Nye County are Americans, too. LOUIS J. DECANIO |
