DAR meets

The Pahrump Springs chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution will have a meeting at 10 a.m. May 13 in the Pahrump Community Library.

Masonic breakfast

The Masonic Lodge will host a pre-Mother's Day breakfast 8 to 11 a.m., May 9 at the lodge, 281 Gemini Dr.

The menu will include ham-and-cheese-stuffed French toast, sausage links and scrambled eggs.

The cost is a $5 donation for adults and a $3 donation for children under 12.

Proceeds benefit the scholarship fund. The public is welcome.

Soroptimist's Bunco Night

Soroptimist of Pahrump Valley will have a Bunco Night for ladies only at 6:30 p.m. May 30 in the Charleston Peak RV Clubhouse.

This event is fun, fast-paced and easy to learn. Prizes will be awarded. Wine and soft drinks will be available. The cost is $3 per person.

Utilities Inc. update meeting

Utilities Inc. will host an informal meeting in two sessions May 14 at Mountain Falls Clubhouse. The first session will be 10 a.m. to noon and the second session will be 6 to 8 p.m.

These sessions will include a summary of future plans and an open discussion. The vice president and other staff members will answer questions and receive comments and suggestions.

O-Mok-See

The Rising Star Equestrian Association, an NPO, will hold another O-Mok-See beginning with sign-up at 9 a.m. May 17 in Amargosa Valley as part of the Amargosa Days celebration.

The cost will be $10 per entry for RSEA members and Amargosa Valley residents and $25 for non-members.

Kids games will follow the O-Mok-See.

Another O-Mok-See is scheduled for May 30 and 31 in Pahrump.

Stand for Children Day

NyE Communities Coalition and St. Martin's in the Desert Episcopal Church will sponsor the 10th annual Stand for Children/Teacher of the Year Program at 11:30 a.m. May 16 at Rosemary Clarke Middle School.

The program will include a luncheon, Teacher of the Year awards from each school and all-youth entertainment.

Sheriff Tony DeMeo will hold public open forums at Wulfy's Sports Bar at 1 p.m. on the following dates:

Library notices

* The Pahrump Community Library is accepting applications for volunteer security persons. Volunteers are asked to give five to 10 hours per week.

Applications are available at the main circulation desk.

* The Pahrump Community Library has a sufficient number of literacy tutors and is ready for students.

Vote for Pahrump

The Pahrump Valley Chamber of Commerce has an opportunity to have Pahrump featured in an upcoming issue of Nevada Magazine which is published by the Nevada Commission on Tourism.

The series will be "Touring Around Nevada," and will feature only rural communities. The article will also be featured in the online version of the magazine called "Turning Book."

Vote to get Pahrump noticed by sending votes to editor@nevadamagazine. com. The town with the most votes wins.

Public service announcement

The Nye County Sheriff's Office offers a free service to check for sex offenders living in your area. The service has been in existence since 2006.

Library summer reading

The Pahrump Community Library Summer Reading Club is coming soon.

Sign up now for "Be Creative at Your Library," June 16-July 22.

A kick-off presentation with storyteller Glenda Bonin, "Just imagine: Stories for the fun of it," will be 10 a.m. June 16.

Regular classes will begin the following week: ages 4-5, 9-10 a.m., Wednesday; ages 6-11, 1-2:15 p.m., Tuesdays or 10:30-11:45 a.m., Wednesdays; fifth grade and up, 2:30-3:30 p.m., Tuesdays.

Fast Track program

The Nye County adult education program is offering GED testing and courses.

The GED test can be used to waive English, math, science and social studies electives depending on test scores.

Nevada High School Proficiency Exams with passing scores are a prerequisite, and the adult education offers those classes as well.

CASA recruiting volunteers

The newly formed 5th Judicial District Court appointed special advocates for neglected and abused children is accepting applications for volunteers to work with children within the court system.

A CASA volunteer will work directly with the children, schools, parents (biological and foster) and Social Services to determine their bests interests and help the court in deciding permanent placement.

Volunteers must pass a background check and provide CASA with the minimum of a two-year commitment.

DAV relocated

The Disabled American Veterans service officer, Reggie Knight, has relocated his offices to Desert View Hospital, 360 S. Lola Lane. The hours remain the same.

Rebuilding Together

Rebuilding Together will continue to work on the project home located at 3451 W. Shelly Lane at 8 a.m. May 9 to paint, trim the yard and finish the porches.

Volunteers are needed and soda, water and lunch will be provided.

Vidalia onions

The Shriners of Pahrump Valley will have sweet vidalia onions for sale at Walmart, Ace Hardware and Smith's Food and Drug the first week in May.

Cinderella Girls wash cars

The Cinderella Girls will wash cars 9 a.m. until ? May 9 in Wulfy's parking lot on Highway 160.

Money will go toward the scholarship program.

The Pahrump Gunfighters will meet at 10 a.m. May 9 in the Bob Ruud Community Center.

Employment computer class

Nye County Health and Human Services, through a block grant, will join JobConnect and GBC from 8 a.m. to noon and 1 to 5 p.m., May 28, for a free one-day computer training class for eligible individuals seeking employment who need computer skills to create cover letters and resumes, use Internet browsers and e-mail, perform job searches and set up job search accounts.

Seating is limited to 20. Applications must be completed, required documents provided and applicant deemed eligible to take the class.

PAC meeting

The Pahrump Arts Council will have a general meeting 10 a.m. to noon, May 16 at Great Basin College extension, 1541 E. Basin Ave.

After a short business meeting will be show and tell for artists and a 50/50 raffle.

Lions scholarships

The Pahrump Valley Lions Club is now accepting scholarship applications from seniors graduating Pahrump Valley High School in June 2009.

The deadline to submit completed applications is May 15.

Rotary Club scholarships

The Pahrump Valley Rotary Club will award two $500 academic scholarships to graduating seniors for the 2008-09 school year to attend an accredited college or trade school of choice.

Memorial Day service

There will be a Memorial Day service to honor Cmdr. Thomas L. MacAdam, US. Navy Chaplain Corps, Ret., at 9:30 a.m., May 25 at the G.G. Sweet Veterans Memorial Park at Gamebird Road and Money Street.

MacAdams served in the Navy from 1969 to 1989, including tours with the Fleet Marine Force in Vietnam.

He was ordained in 1958 and moved to Pahrump in 1997. He served as pastor of Saved by Grace Lutheran Church from Jan. 1, 2001, until he retired.

The service is open to the public.

AARP driver safety

The AARP driver safety class will be May 20-21.
