Art & Sol Saturday and Sunday

The Pahrump Art Council will again host the Art & Sol Festival tomorrow and Sunday.

This is the 15th annual event for the art council. It used to be held in Honeysuckle Park but now, in order to shelter the displays from the weather, it has moved inside of the Bob Ruud Community Center.

Willi Baer, a committee member helping to organize the show, said there are about 20 vendors displaying their artwork. "It's not as many as in years past, but it will still be a good show."

The Pahrump Arts Council is having to compete with more outdoor events, monthly sales and craft fairs this year and it may be the artists just can't keep up with the demand.

The Pahrump Valley Chamber of Commerce, among others, has added several festivities which have offered artisans the opportunity to display and sell their artwork.

Baer said this year the arts council has been doing some outside advertising with KNPR or National Public Radio in Las Vegas in an effort to increase the number of visitors through the art show.

There are other activities planned as well. Baer said the Dancin' Step Follies, the Sun Country Cloggers and singers are on Saturday's entertainment agenda.

Along with the displays of paintings using all mediums, work with pressed flowers, molded ceramics and gift ideas, there will be more jewelry vendors than ever.

"Quite a number of jewelry crafts people are in the show this year," said Baer. "Most work with beading and different styles of beading."

Each of the vendors has also donated a work of art for the arts council to use as door prizes. Entrance into Art & Sol gets the participant a free drawing ticket.

Something new this year is a Chinese auction. It goes like this. Some of the higher ticket works of art will be put up for auction.

There will be a container placed in front of the item and bidders purchase tickets on which they will write their contact information.

The ticket is then placed in the container coinciding with the desired piece. A drawing will be held at 3:30 p.m. Sunday to see who wins each artwork.

Tickets will be $1 each or six for $5. Bidders do not have to be present to win.

Hours for Art & Sol are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday.
