Trojan golfers closing in on 4-A regionals

LAS VEGAS -- Pahrump Valley moved a step closer to qualifying for the Sunset Region Class 4-A regionals, with a strong performance at Angel Park here Wednesday.

The Trojans shot 407 on the par 71, 6,223-yard course on a warm, relatively calm afternoon; they were third behind Bonanza ( 387) and Bishop Gorman (405). Sierra Vista had 414, Spring Valley 426 and Clark 488, while Desert Oasis, Durango and Western did not post team scores.

The Bob Hopkins-coached Trojans were led by the 77s shot by Elliott Owens and Dorian Patel. Ryam Hammar had 80, Shane Lindemann 83, Josh Spradlin 90 and Daniel Shimakawa 91.

Bonanza's Yongsoo Shin shared medalist honors with a 3-over 74 and was one of three Bonanza golfers in the top five. Minsoo Kim and John Milne each carded a 75 for the Bengals. Desert Oasis' Steven Kennedy and Gorman's Rod Bigelow each shot 74.

* In a Sunset Northwest match played at Paiute Sun (par 72), Palo Verde edged Centennial 384-397, with Arbor View third at 412.

Cimarron-Memorial had 467, with Shadow Ridge at 473.

Kyel Melchiorre and Errek McClellan each had 72 for Palo Verde.

Greg Kerber led Centennial with 76, while James Newman of the Bulldogs had 77. Mark Agustin paced Arbor View with 77.

The Sunset regionals are May 13-14 (with the second day at Mountain Falls), with the state 4-A tournament to be played May 20-21 at Sparks.
