Pitchers ruled the day Wednesday, when Pahrump Valley's fast-pitch softball and baseball teams swept visiting Las Vegas Western in Sunset Region Southwest Class 4-A Division games.

Righthander Taylor Ball, getting a rare varsity game start, threw a five-inning no-hitter to lead Pahrump Valley to a 10-0 win over visiting Western.

In baseball, sophomore lefthander Sam Morrow struck out seven and allowed only two hits as Pahrump Valley ended a seven-game losing streak with a 6-0 victory against Western. This game was actually decided by one of baseball rarest plays -- a full-scale steal of home by Jarret Holley -- in a four-run first inning rally.

The baseball Trojans are at home today against Desert Oasis. Preceding the game, Rod Poteete, a former PVHS baseball coach and a long-time teacher who plans to retire at the end of the school year, will throw out the first pitch.

Ceremonies will begin at around 3:15 p.m. with game time at 3:30.

Ball struck out five and walked only one.

Pahrump Valley scored in four of the innings -- including six in the fourth -- to stymie the visitors.

Becca Gamble was 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI for the Trojans, who moved to 5-8 in the division and 9-15 in all games. They are at home today against Desert Oasis.

In other Southwest softball:

Bishop Gorman 6, Sierra Vista 5 -- At Majestic Park, the Gaels scored four runs in the fifth inning and held on to beat the Mountain Lions. Claudia Franco's two-run single gave Gorman a 4-2 lead before it scored the final two runs on a pair of Sierra Vista errors. Gorman's Alexis Aguirre struck out 13 in a complete-game win, allowing seven hits with no walks.

Durango 3, Clark 2 -- At Durango, Nicole Schultz walked to lead off the bottom of the seventh inning and winning pitcher Ashley Hall drove her home with a triple to lift the Trailblazers over the Chargers. Schultz led off the game with a home run.

Bonanza 16, Desert Oasis 1 -- At Bonanza, the Bengals scored 14 runs in the last two innings to rout the Diamondbacks.

In Southwest baseball:

Bonanza 12, Desert Oasis 5 -- At Desert Oasis, Kris Bryant and Heriberto Orozco each smacked a pair of home runs for the winners. Bryant went 3-for-5 with a triple and four RBIs, and Orozco had a double and three RBIs.

Bishop Gorman 11, Sierra Vista 9 -- At the College of Southern Nevada, Joey Rickard went 3-for-3 with three RBIs as Gorman held off a furious comeback by the Mountain Lions to clinch at least a share of the Southwest League title.

Tyler Wagner was 2-for-2 with a double and two runs scored, and Joey Gallo homered for Gorman, which improved to 13-0 in the league and has a three-game lead over second-place Durango (10-3) with three games remaining.

Jake Hager was 3-for-4 with a solo home run and three runs for Sierra Vista, which trailed 9-0 after three innings.

Durango 13, Clark 3 -- At Durango, Josh Hull went 4-for-4 with a double and three RBIs and Danny Maloney went 3-for-4 with two RBIs to lead the Trailblazers over the Chargers in six innings. Greg McKinney supplied a triple and Zack Hollenback had a double for Durango.
