Is it 'Cops' or town board?

PTO 43 passed again; board mum

It looked like an episode of the TV show "Cops" Tuesday night after the Pahrump Town Board meeting, as four Nye County sheriff's deputies drove their patrol vehicles into the parking lot of the Bob Ruud Community Center, scattering a group of angry residents.

The men, including Don Cox, an outspoken member of Concerned Citizens for a Safe Community, were confronting Town Manager Bill Kohbarger as he attempted to escort board Chairman Nicole Shupp and member Vicky Parker to their vehicles in the dark lot at about 10:30 p.m.

The in-your-face posturing was the second such incident of the evening, as a similar scenario played out about 15 minutes earlier as Kohbarger walked to his own car, parked directly in front of the building, to stow his meeting materials.

The trash ordinance, PTO No. 43, was the cause of both dustups.

As of Wednesday, no charges are being considered, although Kohbarger expressed surprise that residents seem to believe he holds power over the board's decisions.

"I can't do that," he said. "That's not my job. The board members were committed to passing the ordinance and moving on with life. The residents got 60 to 65 percent of the changes they wanted made to the ordinance.

"The board had to consider the comments made by our town attorney and the other attorneys involved in our recently settled lawsuit involving Pahrump Valley Disposal and Mr. Clean," explained Kohbarger.
