Local agencies plan response to swine flu
By GINA B. GOOD
Gov. Jim Gibbons on Monday ordered all state agencies "to be vigilant" regarding swine flu, adding, "Every asset and employee of the state is available to assist in any effort to protect the health of our citizens and visitors." First responders in Pahrump met Monday to begin coordinating efforts. Nye County Emergency Services, sheriff's office staff, school district nurse Pam Peterson and others established protocols and procedures to work together should the swine flu visit Pahrump or the more outlying communities. Dr. Jon Krohmer of health affairs at the Department of Homeland Security spoke Tuesday during a teleconference set up by Sen. Harry Reid to brief the media and others about the role of first responders during a health crisis. "We are the health administrator for FEMA and other agencies, and as such we deal with the potential affect on the country's infrastructure. We have been working very closely with the first responder community, including emergency services and law enforcement, to make sure we have appropriate guidance for preparing for large volumes of influenza patients," said Krohmer. This week Nye County Emergency Services added disinfectants to their supplies, stocking cases of bleach, Lysol spray and hand sanitizer as well as gloves, protective masks and more. Volunteers assembled 160 bags to be put in deputies' patrol cars containing sanitary gloves and N95 particulate respirator masks. |
