The Death Valley Walk for Life, an event to raise funds for the American Cancer Society, will take place Sunday and Monday beginning at the Furnace Creek Resort.

The walk began 10 years ago when Xanterra employee Sharon Funck, the concessionaire at Death Valley, walked 14 miles from Furnace Creek to Stovepipe Wells to conquer her fear of sleeping alone in the desert. Funck was later diagnosed with cancer but recovered by 2006 to resume the walk.

The walk begins at 6:15 a.m. Sunday, hikers will pack their sleeping bags and camping gear into a support van. The 17-mile walk begins at Badwater and proceeds to Artist Palette Sunday.

Vans will provide transportation back to Furnace Creek.

A dinner is planned at 5 p.m. at the Furnace Creek Campground. A candlelight vigil is planned in honor of cancer victims and survivors. On Monday, after a sunrise continental breakfast at Furnace Creek, the group will be transported to Artist Palette, after which they will walk the rest of the way to Furnace Creek. Registration costs $30 which includes the walk, T-shirt, water bottle, lanyard and pen. The contact is Sharon Funck, at (760)786-2493.

A Walk for Life Golf Tournament will precede the event on Saturday. The cost is $25 including the golf cart. Interested golfers may call the pro shop at (760) 786-3373.
