Every coach wants athletes to stay healthy and remain academically eligible (as well as avoid disciplinary action).

Chris Iverson, the first-year baseball coach at Pahrump Valley High School, knows about those elements that can affect a team. He has had players injured and/or ill, declared ineligible because of grades and sidelined by disciplinary action.

"I had nine players in uniform today," said Iverson, whose team fought off all of those distractions to defeat Las Vegas Clark 8-4 in the Trojans' first-ever Sunset Region Southwest Class 4-A Division game at the high school field Tuesday.

The Trojans were 3-5 in all games when they played at Durango in a division game Thursday. Today, Pahrump Valley is at home against Sierra Vista and Monday, defending Nevada 4-A champion Bishop Gorman visits for another division contest.

"Our three wins are against 4-A-sized schools," said Iverson, who is PVHS's sixth baseball coach since Mitch Lunde left in 2001. "We beat Mohave (Bullhead City, Ariz.) and Liberty, as well as Clark, so we have kids who can play. We just have to have enough to put a team on the field."

Against Clark, Eli Cline and Joe McCaw each went 3-for-4 as the Trojans beat the Chargers. Joey McCaw, a sophomore righthander pitching in relief of starter Sam Morrow and middle reliever Garrett Darr, got the save in working the final two innings.

A three-run first inning and another three-run outburst in the third powered the Trojans to the win.

In other division games Tuesday:

Spring Valley 7, Bonanza 3 -- At Bonanza, Chase LaComb was 2-for-3 with a home run, a double, three RBIs and two runs to lead the Grizzlies over the Bengals. Billy Bob Ward had a homer and two RBIs for Spring Valley. Aaron Blair struck out eight and allowed one earned run on five hits in six innings to get the win. Bonanza's Sterling Sprau was 2-for-3 with an RBI.

Sierra Vista 18, Western 0 -- At Sierra Vista, Alex Estrella and Kyle Gamble combined on a five-inning no-hitter to lead the Mountain Lions past the Warriors. Brooks Klein was 2-for-3 with a home run and four RBIs for Sierra Vista. Connor Klein went 3-for-3 with a double.

Bishop Gorman 20, Durango 1 -- At Durango, Jeff Malm went 4-for-5 with three runs and four RBIs as the Gaels used a seven-run first inning and an eight-run fifth to rout the Trailblazers. R.J. Santigate, Neil Lawhorn and Joey Rickard each had three of Gorman's 21 hits. Joey Rickard and Tyler Wagner combined on a three-hitter for the Gaels, who opened the division season Monday with a 29-3 rout of Clark at Cashman Field, which will host all of Gorman's division home games.

Pahrump Valley plays a road game against Gorman April 27.
