PV girls bow in 4-A debut
By DON McDERMOTT
Playing in Class 4-A presents one major problem for the youthful Pahrump Valley High School girls' fast-pitch softball team. And it isn't necessarily the quality of the competition "We don't get much time to practice," said Rich Lauver, the Trojans coach, after his team fell 8-2 to Las Vegas Clark in its Sunset Region Southwest Division opener Tuesday at Floyd Field. "We're going to have to have a big practice tomorrw (Wednesday) because of the schedule." And his team needs all the work it can get; the Trojans had no seniors on the field at the start of the game against the defending Southwest Division champion Chargers Tuesday. Thursday, PVHS played at Durango, and today, the girls are at home to play Sierra Vista (3:30 p.m.). Monday, Bishop Gorman visits Floyd Field; Tuesday, it's off to Western, and Thursday, the Trojans go to Desert Oasis before heading for Kingman, Ariz., for a two-day tournament. For the third consecutive game, opponents put on late-inning rallies to earn victories. Boulder City scored all of its runs in the seventh inning to win 4-1; Liberty scored six unearned runs in the final two innings to prevail 10-7, and Clark scored six runs in its final two at bats to pull away from a 2-2 tie. Clark's Julia Hagen pitched a complete game to lift the Chargers past the Trojans. Hagen gave up seven hits, walked one and struck out eight. She also was 4-for-4 with a double. Elisa Dawson went 2-for-3 with a double for Clark. Taylor Raymer and Becca Gamble had back-to-back hits in the seventh, but the Trojans were unable to score. Elsewhere in division openers: Durango 10, Bishop Gorman 0 -- At Durango, Taylor Short tossed a one-hitter to lead the Trailblazers to a five-inning win over the Gaels. Sam Juarez went 3-for-3 with a double and two RBIs and Lindsay Williams and Marley Sandoval each went 2-for-3 with a double for Durango. Sierra Vista 12, Western 1 -- At Sierra Vista, Tayler Aleman was 1-for-2 with a third-inning grand slam as the Mountain Lions rolled past Western. Ashley Krumme was 2-for-2 with a double and three runs for Sierra Vista. Maria Capparelli tossed a five-inning four-hitter and struck out nine. Bonanza 16, Spring Valley 2 -- At Bonanza, Brittany Spencer was 3-for-3 with a double, home run and three RBIs to help the Bengals rout the Grizzlies. Courtney Spencer pitched all five innings for Bonanza, scattering five hits with one walk and three strikeouts. -- The Web site, www.nevadapreps.com, contributed to this story. |
