The Pahrump Valley Chamber of Commerce has adopted a new strategy in fundraising -- more venues for Pahrump and its visitors.

April 4, "Rock Around the Clock Sock Hop and Classic Car Show" will be the second of the festivities on the new events schedule.

The fun will be 9-6 p.m. at the Pahrump Valley Auto Plaza on East Charleston Park Avenue. The event is titled "Rock Around the Clock Sock Hop and Classic Car Show.

There will be dozens of classic cars, many of them presented by Valley Cruisers Classic Car Club, on display. there will be judging and prizes for the coolest cars.

And because contests rule, the day's events will include prizes awarded for dance competitions -- all from the 1950s and '60s.

Remember the Hula-Hoop? There will be a contest for it as well.

Break out those poodle skirts and enter the judging for Best 50s Look.

Part of the event will be dedicated to a food drive benefitting No To Abuse. Non-perishable items like canned goods; cereals, pasta and rice; condiments, drink mixes, peanut butter and staples like cooking oil or spray, tea, coffee, and powdered milk or cocoa are all good choices.

The object is to fill a car trunk -- or two -- or three. Those donating to the food drive will receive a coupon for a drawing to win a Cruiser collectible T-shirt.

Food will be available for party-goers from local vendors. "The food will be like the old days," said Bill Wingfield, the PVCC convention manager. "Old fashioned hamburgers and shakes and sodas just like the soda shop or soda fountain used to sell."

There will also be popcorn, ice cream, candies, beer and water available.

The Pahrump Chamber is implementing plans to offer more events both to raise money and to offer visitors more options and reasons to visit here.

Next on the agenda is the 11th annual Biz Expo scheduled for April 24-25, followed by the new Frontier Days and Chili Shootout May 15 and 16 in Petrack Park.

There will be a chamber picnic June 6, and July 3 and 4 it's time for the Freedom Festival.

Call the chamber, 727-5800, for more information.
