Sand drags The Amargosa Racing Association will hold a sand drags program Saturday, starting at 10 a.m. with time trials. The first race will be at 1 p.m. Blown alcohol drags are featured in the bracket racing-format program. Other races are scheduled May 2, Sept. 19 and Oct. 10, with time trials from noon to 4 p.m. and racing at sundown on those dates. On Nov. 13 will be a day race, with a banquet and awards program afterwards. The track, which started operating in 1983, is located two miles off Highway 127 on Farm Road in the Amargosa Valley. Opening day The Pahrump Valley Babe Ruth/Cal Ripken League Opening Day ceremonies begin at 9 a.m. Saturday at Honeysuckle Park. The league still needs players for teams in the Junior (13-14-15) Division. Teams are now practicing; youngsters interested in playing, but are not yet registered, can stop by Honeysuckle Park and ask for a coach to get information after 5 p.m. Age groups are 4 to 18, with May 1 the age determination date. T-ball and Rookies will be in the 4-8 age groups; Minor, Major, Junior, Senior in the 9-18 age groups. The cost will be $65 for 4-8s and $95 for 9 to 18s. Payment arrangements will be available. For information, call 751-9595. So far, there are more than 360 players registered. There are five Minor, four Major and four Junior teams scheduled to play this season. Scorekeepers The Pahrump Valley Softball Association's season-opening Ice Breaker tournament starts at 9 a.m. Saturday at Petrack Park. * The PVSA is seeking scorekeepers. Roller hockey The Roller Hockey League at Skate Zone continues. Week 6 results Youth Leagues Orange Flames 7, Green Hawks 6 Hot Cheetos 6, Wranglers 4 Ducks 6, Avalanche 5. (C.J. Nicosia scored four goals for the Avalanche.) Week 7 results Orange Flames 19, Green Hawks 2 Ducks 5, Wranglers 1 (James Witten scored four goals for the Ducks). Hot Cheetos 8, Avalanche 3 (Robbie Barlicks and Sierra Tucsnak scored four goals each for Cheetos). Bowling Margaret Long had a 718 to win the Pahrump Valley 500 Club's singles tournament last weekend. Shawn Webster led the groupies with 793. Patty Folk won the 50-50 drawing. A doubles 9-pin no-tap tournament will be held April 1. * The Pahrump Valley Tournament Bowling Club will hold a singles 3-6-9 tournament, by division and handicap, Saturday at the Nugget. Squad times are 12:30 p.m. and 3 p.m., with the tournament open only to active club members. Membership dues can be paid with the entry form. Dee and Jerry Runau are co-sponsors for the tournament. Cookie sale The Pahrump Youth Softball Association is selling cookies. To order these "break-and-bake" cookies, go to the snack bar at Honeysuckle Park Fields 3 and 4 or call Cyndi at 727-7098. Proceeds will benefit the PYSA. Farmers Cup The Farmers Cup Adult-Junior Golf Series will be played June 14, July 12 and Aug. 9, instead of in the spring. Robert Worden, the series director, said information on the event can be found by e-mailing him at rworden@farmersagent.com, or by calling 1-775-910-9624. The tournament format calls for an adult and a junior player to form a team for medal play. Players 6-8 and 9-11 will play nine-hole matches, while players 12-14 and 15-18 will compete in 18-hole rounds. The costs are $20 for all junior players; $25 for adults playing with a 6-8 or 9-11 golfer and $35 for adults playing in an 18-hole match. Pre-registration will be required before each match, with the deadlines June 10 for the first round, July 8 for the second, and Aug. 5 for the finale. All matches will be played at Mountain Falls. First-place medals will be awarded in each division. First-, second- and third-place teams in each age division will receive medals. Camps slated Applications are now being evaluated for the Ten-Star All-Star Basketball Camp, for boys and girls 10 to 19 years old. Pop Warner Registration is now open for the 2009 Pop Warner football season. Players 5 to 7 years old and weighing 75 pounds or less play for one team; the second team is for youth 8 to 11 who weigh 105 pounds or less. The age is as of July 31, 2009. The cost of registration is $180. Registration forms can be picked up, and completed, at Worden's Farmers Insurance Agency, 2210 E. Commercial Road (off Highway 160 at the Nevada State Bank). Office hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. The Pahrump Pop Warner teams play in the Southern Nevada Conference. The Rush is in the Pee-Wee Division (ages 8 to 11) and will be coached by Robert Worden. The Sharks of the tiny-mite division (ages 5 to 7) will be coached by Damon Plant. Sin City golf The Sin City Chamber of Commerce/Chicken Ranch golf tournament will be played April 25 at Mountain Falls. Registration will be at 7 a.m. for the best ball tournament, which will have a shotgun start at 7:30. The entry fee is $125 for one player, $450 for a foursome.
