LA Sheriff's team claims Baker-Vegas bragging rights

More than 5,000 runners from 260 teams competed in the 25th Baker-to-Vegas Challenge Cup Relay this past weekend; relay point No. 10 (pictured) was at Blagg Road and Highway 372 in Pahrump, with the 20-stage, 120-mile foot race from Baker, Calif., ending at the Las Vegas Convention Center. For the second straight year, the Los Angeles Sheriff's Department Main Central Jail won the Baker-to-Vegas Challenge Cup last weekend, outracing runnerup California Highway Patrol-Sacramento Division by more than 11 minutes.

The 20-stage, 120-mile running race from Baker, Calif., to the Convention Center in Las Vegas attracted 247 teams, meaning almost 5,000 men and women competed in the 25th annual event.

The LASD-MCJ's time was 12 hours, 48 minutes, 48 seconds, with CHP-Sacramento completing the race in 12:58:51. Third in 13:38.16 was FBI-Los Angeles.

The top five included San Diego PD (13:28.17) and Santa Ana PD (13:44.31).

The first team to pass through Pahrump -- around 5:30 p.m. Saturday -- was the California State University Police Department, which finished 186th overall in 18:51:43.

The Nye County Sheriff's Department, running for the first time, was 244th out of 247 teams, completing the varied terrain course in 21:56.26.

Two European teams -- both representing Germany -- raced. The Hamburg Police Department was 83rd in 16:40.51, while the Berlin PD was 93rd in 16:50:48.

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police team from Edmonton was 206th overall in 19:25:30.

Winning the women's championship was the LAPD in 16: 18.36. The Orange County Sheriff's Department was second in 16:27.51. A total of 10 women's teams participated.

Winners by division

The 25th annual Baker-to-Vegas Challenge Cup Race was contested Saturday and Sunday; the 20-stage, 120-mile race started 20 miles from Baker, Calif., and finished in the Las Vegas Convention Center.

The Open Division title was won by the Los Angeles Sheriff's Department Main County Jail in 12 hours, 48 minutes, 46 seconds.

Second in 12:59.51 was the California Highway Patrol, Sacramento Division.

Third in 13:38:51 was the San Diego Police Department.
