Beatty's baseball team won the Pahranagat Valley Alamo Invitational tournament last weekend, winning three of four games.

Coach Brian Hayes' team defeated the host Panthers 12-6, lost 28-0 to Carlin, shelled Sandy Valley 17-2 and stunned Carlin 4-3 in the finals.

In the finale, Beatty had just two hits, but Kyle Marchand held the Railroaders to three hits, striking out six and walking two in five innings.

Jacob Sumpter, Jose Moreno and Ivan Maldonado (two) had the RBIs for the Hornets.

"Marchand pitched complete games in both the Alamo and Carlin games to carry us to the championship," said Hayes. "Our kids showed some resiliency after being demolished by Carlin the day before."

Against Alamo, Marchand gave up five earned runs as he struck out seven, walked four and allowed seven hits.

Joe Serrano (2-for-3, two runs), Anthony Regalado (3-for-4, three runs, two RBI) and Isaac Flores (4-for-4, two doubles, two triples, three runs) paced the Hornets' offense.

Marchand, Moreno and Brandon Villanueva combined for four RBI. Sumpter scored two runs.

Flores was the winning pitcher against Sandy Valley, pitching 1 1/3 innings of shutout relief.

The Hornets had eight hits, including two by Serrano, who scored three runs and had a RBI. Sumpter added three runs batted in.

Beatty swept a non-league twin bill from Mountain View Christian, 15-5 and 20-11, collecting a total of 26 hits in the wins.

* Tonopah's golf team, in its 2009 season debut at the Nellis AFB course in Las Vegas, lost 208-232 to Mountain View Christian School last week.

Denver Otteson of the Muckers shot a five-over par 41 to earn medalist honors. Chris Greber had 51, Alex Bridgman 60 and A.J. Gromis 75 for Tonopah.

Dennis Bee led the Saints with 42.

"We played pretty good for our first match," said coach Robert Otteson. "I was happy with all of our golfers. A.J. was playing in his first-ever match and did not play bad for only picking the game up three weeks ago."

Tonopah will play in the West Wendover Invitational March 26. A total of 10 teams are expected to compete.

* In the Laughlin Invitational Track meet last weekend, Tonopah, Round Mountain and Beatty competed.

The Laughlin girls, with 127 points, won, as did the Spring Mountain boys, with 115 1/2 points.

Beatty's 4x400-meter girls relay team won in an impressive 4:19 and the Hornets' Anthony Turner won the boys 400 in 53 flat.
