US-TOO Prostate Cancer Group formsPVT
A relatively new chapter of US-TOO, an international prostate cancer support group, has formed in Pahrump. The first meeting was held Jan. 22 and was very successful. The stated mission of the group is to communicate timely, reliable information enabling informed choices regarding detection and treatment of prostate cancer. In 2005, approximately 232,000 men were diagnosed with prostate cancer, the second leading cause of cancer deaths for men in the U.S. African-American males have an incidence rate up to 60 percent higher than white males and double the mortality rate. An African-American male is diagnosed every 100 minutes. If there is a male relative in a family who has been diagnosed with prostate cancer, he is at a much higher risk of the disease. Early detection is the key to survival and every male over 40 should have a basic check for prostate health. Those at risk should begin check-ups at age 35 according to US-TOO recommendations. The Pahrump chapter has received their charter from the national organization as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. It is seeking donations and looking for sponsors in efforts to educate those looking for answers. Brochures, newsletters and other handouts are available to educate members and it is actively soliciting men and their wives/others to support the chapter. The next meeting is at 5 p.m. March 26 in the library. The chapter meets the fourth Thursday of each month. Call Jim Gregory, 727-7482, for more information, or e-mail him at hitekjim@sbcglobal.net. |
