BASEBALL, SOFTBALL Trojan teams in Arizona for 2009 debuts

BULLHEAD CITY, Ariz. -- Two games Thursday got the 2009 baseball season under way for Pahrump Valley. Today, the fast-pitch softball team swings into action. Both teams are in the Route 66 Classic, sponsored by greater Bullhead City-area school River Valley. Thursday, coach Chris Iverson debuted as the coach of the Trojans' baseball team, as it took on Bullhead City and River Valley. Today at 4:30 p.m. (MT), the Trojans play Spring Creek, a Northern Nevada Class 3-A League team. Saturday, PVHS faces Ely White Pine at 11:30 a.m. and Chino, Ariz., at 4:30. Monday, the Trojans are at home to play a non-league game against Class 3-A Boulder City (3:30 p.m. PT). Wednesday, PVHS hosts Henderson Liberty at 3:30. The Trojans open Sunset Region Southwest 4-A division play March 24 at home against Las Vegas Clark (3:30 p.m.) The Trojans have six seniors -- infielder Casey Clendenen, outfielder Davide Pozzoni, infielder-pitcher Mike Gonzalez, utility player K.J. Jasperson, infielder-pitcher Danny Cazier, and outfielder-pitcher John Estrella. Also the Trojans' roster are: * Freshman Aaron Pike, shortstop-pitcher; * Sophomores Joe McCaw, OF/P; Tommy Eaton, OF/P; Sam Morrow, 1B/P; Alexander Davidson, OF; Eduardo Martinez, C. * Juniors Jarret Holley, IF/OF; Eli Cline, 2B; Ryan Pike, OF/P and Garrett Darr, 1B/DH. Rich Lauver, who guided the Trojans to state 3-A titles in 2003, 2004 and 2005, has returned as the fast-pitch softball coach. Preston Dockter, who guided the 2008 Trojans to 30 wins and a state tournament berth, died in a motorcycle accident in September. The Lady Trojans play Escondido, Calif., at 10 a.m. today. At 2, they face Phoenix Horizon Christian, and at 6, River Valley will be the opponent. At 11 a.m. Saturday, the Trojans will take on River Valley again. Monday, PVHS is host to Boulder City (3:30 p.m.). Wednesday, Liberty visits (3:30 p.m.) The first league game is March 24 against Clark (3:30 p.m.). Only two seniors -- outfielder Karen Daun and infielder Arlette Scott -- are on the girls' roster. The freshmen are Aubrey Cobel, P/IF, and Tranyce Rankin, 3B/P. The sophomores are Petra Beighley, OF; Leanne Morrow, OF; Briana Wilson, 3B/C; Taylor Ball, P/OF and Casey Scheller, IF. The juniors are Rachel Hartwick, utility; Becca Gamble, C/3B; Taylor Raymer, SS/2B and Destini Codera, utility. |
