Volunteers wanted The Nevada Outreach Training Organization (NOTO) needs volunteers to man the food pantry located at the offices, 621 S. Blagg Road. Duties include stocking shelves, checking expiration dates, preparing food boxes for clients, assisting with commodities delivery, inventory and other related tasks. Volunteers should be able to work four hours per day, for one or more days per week and must be able to lift and carry up to 25 pounds with and without mechanical assistance. Applicants must understand and be able to follow directions and be able to communicate orally and in writing. Background checks and drug screening are required. DAV relocated The Disabled American Veterans service officer, Reggie Knight, has relocated his offices to Desert View Hospital, 360 S. Lola Lane. The hours remain the same. Fifth Sunday sing There will be an all church fifth Sunday sing at 6 p.m. March 29 in the Bob Ruud Community Center. Gather and sing to praise the Lord with all types of music, hymns and worship. Dog obedience classes The Pahrump Valley Obedience Club will conduct a six-week dog obedience class for beginners and advanced handlers every Saturday morning starting at 10 a.m. March 14. Amargosa potluck and auction The Amargosa Community Center will hold an annual potluck and auction of goods and services at 5 p.m. March 14 in the community center on Farm Road. RCMS Science Night Rosemary Clarke Middle school will host the second annual Science Night 6-7 p.m. March 19 in the gym. The event is for all grade levels, parents and students. This is a hands-on participation event. Parents, bring students to participate in stations for pressure, paper rocket launches, wind turbine, Study Island, Internet resources and math activity stations. The event is sponsored by the RCMS math and science departments in conjunction with the 21st Century Grant. Rebuilding Together Rebuilding Together is seeking homeowners who need help with repairs, free of charge to those who qualify. The volunteer organization helps those who need to stay warm, dry, safe and secure in their homes. The deadline is March 20 and applications are available at Galiano's American Grill at the intersection of Postal and Loop roads, Home Depot, the chamber of commerce, Pahrump Senior Center and No To Abuse. Charleston Elementary will hold the annual book fair March 23 through 27 in the library of the school. The library will be open noon-2 p.m. to view or purchase books. Fish Fry Our Lady of the Valley Catholic Church will host a fish fry 4-7 p.m. each Friday through April 3, 781 E. Gamebird Road. Fried and baked fish dinners are $7. Relay For Life fundraiser Valley Electric Association will have a yard sale as a fundraiser for the American Cancer Society Relay For Life beginning at 7 a.m. April 4 in front of the main building, 800 E. Free radon test kits Radon, the number one cause of lung cancer in non-smokers, is a cancer-causing radioactive gas. The University of Nevada Cooperative Extension Office and the Nevada State Health Division are offering free testing kits. The kits will be available for a limited time. Legal services The Family Resource Center has partnered with Nevada Legal Services to provide low income residents with a virtual attorney service. At the Family Resource Center office, personal meetings to speak to an attorney regarding civil issues is available. Adult literacy The Pahrump Community Library has a sufficient number of literacy tutors and is ready for students. Adults interested in getting help with reading skills, call 727-5930, ext. 19. The service is free. Fast Track program The Nye County adult education program is offering GED testing and courses. The GED test can be used to waive English, math, science and social studies electives depending on test scores. Nevada High School Proficiency Exams with passing scores are a prerequisite, and the adult education offers those classes as well. For more information, stop by the office, 484 S. Job seekers 55 and older AARP Foundation has a few part-time, temporary positions for unemployed persons 55 and older and have extremely limited income. Prostate cancer support The new Pahrump chapter of US-TOO, an international prostate cancer support group met for the first time Jan. 22. The mission is to communicate timely and reliable information to enable informed choices regarding the detection and treatment of prostate cancer. Prostate cancer is the leading cause of death in men over 35. RCMS testing schedule Rosemary Clarke Middle School will adhere to the following test schedule for students. Computer Users meet The Pahrump Computer Users will meet at 1 p.m. April 6 in the large meeting room of the library. Mike Irwin will present the new "Windows 7" and Don will summarize programs available from Google. Ample parking is provided in the rear of the library and is the preferred parking area. Prom dress drive The NyE Communities Coalition is sponsoring the annual drive for gently used formal and semi-formal prom dresses, accessories and dress shoes to help girls go to the prom. Martinizing Dry Cleaning will donate cleaning. Financial contributions are also being accepted to help young men with the price of prom tickets. Northfield Ranch board members Northfield Ranch Therapy with Animals Inc., a local nonprofit riding center, is pleased to announce nits newest board member. Martha Reedy is a special needs instructor with 30 years experience. The organization is thrilled to have her as the executive coordinator.
