There are many talented craftspeople in Pahrump and sometimes getting the supplies can mean a trip to Las Vegas.

Those who bead will be pleased to learn there is another shop, Death Valley Bead and Rock, open here to provide them with an array of styles and colors with which to create masterpieces of wearable artistry.

Gloria Angelino has been beading beautiful creations for 25 years and said her reason for opening the shop was her need for supplies. "I found myself needing things - beads, findings - and it always meant I either had to order them or make a trip," she said. "It was just easier to open the shop and have supplies on hand." She also enjoys meeting and talking to new customers.

Angelino has fire-polished glass beads in every color, Czech beads, faceted beads and seed beads of all sizes. She also carries findings for the finished look to a nice piece of jewelry.

She also carries natural stones in 8- and 16-inch strands, faceted pendant-size cabochons and large pre-drilled stones of varying color. Some of the stones have been fashioned and faceted by another local artisan.

Angelino loves to design. She said, "I consider my pieces to be art and not just stringing beads together." She is right. Some of her pieces are intricate and some are not difficult, they just appear to be. All of them are outstandingly beautiful.

She says she enjoys teaching the unique styles to others. "The classes are small, usually about five or six people. It gives me the opportunity to give individual attention and catch mistakes before they get out of hand," she said.

For those who want to expand their knowledge and give the creative process a little nudge, Angelino offers classes to teach some of her techniques. Instruction for beginners is 1-4 p.m. each Saturday and the more advanced classes are offered 1-4 p.m. Thursdays.

Terms like "chi-chi," "daisy" and "Cellini spiral" are used to define types and styles of beading. Classes are $15 each including the supplies used in the class project.

Angelino opened her business in a small building on her property and said she would not have attempted going into retail if it wasn't for her low overhead, which keeps her retail pricing extremely reasonable. She offers special ordering, group classes and custom design for special projects.

Her personal outlook of her business venture reflects her personality. Angelino said, "I've never been money driven. What I'd really like to have is more time to do what I love."

The shop is located at 231 S. Stanley Ave., west of Woodchips Road at Basin Avenue. The hours are Tuesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. or by appointment. Call her at 513-5380 for more information.
