LAS VEGAS -- Bishop Gorman's search for a head football coach might be over.

The Contra Costa Times is reporting on its high school sports blog that the Gaels have hired Tony Sanchez as their new coach.

Sanchez wouldn't confirm that he had been hired.

"I don't really have a comment right now," Sanchez said Monday night.

Gorman athletic director Peter Weinburgh could not be reached for comment. Gorman is in the Sunset Region Southwest Class 4-A Division, which includes Pahrump Valley.

Sanchez currently works at California High School in San Ramon, Calif. He posted a 35-21 record in five seasons at California, including a 7-5 mark in 2003. Sanchez took over a team that was 2-8 in 2003 and led it to three playoff appearances.

The Grizzlies had been to the playoffs only four times before Sanchez took over.

Sanchez would take the place of Bob Altshuler, who was told in January that the school would not renew his contract.

Altshuler led Gorman to a 26-2 record in two seasons as head coach. His first team went 14-0 and won the Class 4-A state title in 2007.

The Gaels went 12-2 during the 2008 season, winning the Southwest League title and advancing to the Sunset Region title game where they lost 50-14 to Palo Verde.

That game was Altshuler's only loss to a Nevada school in his two season
