Pop Warner Registration is now open for the 2009 Pop Warner football season. Players 5 to 7 years old and weigh 75 pounds or less play for one team; the second team is for youth 11 and under who weigh 85 pounds or less. The age is as of July 31, 2009. The cost of registration is $180. Registration forms can be picked up, and completed, at Worden's Farmers Insurance Agency, 2210 E. Commercial Road (off Highway 160 at the Nevada State Bank). Office hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. The Pahrump Pop Warner teams play in the Southern Nevada Conference. The Rush is in the Pee-Wee Division (ages 8 to 11) and will be coached by Robert Worden. The Sharks of the tiny-mite division (ages 5 to 7) will be coached by Damon Plant. Youth hockey The Orange Flames outscored the Green Hawks 7-6 in a Youth 5-10 Roller Hockey League game at the Skate Zone last week. In 10-15 contests, it was Avalance 9, Wranglers 4 and Hot Cheetos 5, Ducks 3. The Flames, Ducks and Cheetos have three wins thus far this season. The Green Hawks and Wranglers had two each. Bocce ball Special Olympics bocce ball is underway at the courts in Honeysuckle Park. All equipment is provided. For information, call Kay Jones at 751-4942 or Jim Stoltz at 537-2175. Basketball is still being played at J.G. Johnson School on Saturdays, from 10 a.m. to noon. Track and field will start March 21 at the Pahrump Valley High School track; it runs from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. Need players Pahrump Valley Babe Ruth/Cal Ripken League baseball needs players for teams in the Junior (13-14-15) Division. Teams are now practicing; youngsters interested in playing, but are not yet registered, can stop by Honeysuckle Park and ask for a coach to get information after 5 p.m. Age groups are 4 to 18, with May 1 the age determination date. T-ball and Rookies will be in the 4-8 age groups; Minor, Major, Junior, Senior in the 9-18 age groups. The cost will be $65 for 4-8s and $95 for 9 to 18s. Payment arrangements will be available. There are five Minor, four Major and four Junior teams scheduled to play this season.
Quarter Auction The 2009 Quarter Auction -- the major fundraiser for Pahrump Valley's junior golf programs -- will be Saturday at the Pahrump Nugget. The fundraiser, which has raised more than $100,000 since its inception in the early 1990s, annually attracts more than 300 people, who go after some major prizes -- and can win one by donating at least a quarter. The admission price is $20 or $60 and makes the purchaser eligible to win prizes. The money pays for scholarships and other expenses incurred in running Pahrump Valley Youth Golf Founders Club programs. Send admission/donation to Larry and Elaine Goins, at 2440 S. Coaching the boys' teams are Tim Wombaker, John Toomer, Andy Andersen, Bryan Holmes, Robert Worden, Steve Jersic, Steve Bahret, Garth Oakey, Dave Harris and Oscar Lopez. Girls coaches are Renae Lindgren, Susan Toomer, Tommy Cochrell, Joe Roderick, Doug Maughan, Chaz Chumley and Steve Behret. Coach named Reno McQueen High School has selected Jim Snelling to be the school's second football coach. Snelling replaces 40-year veteran Ken Dalton, who was the only football head coach in the 27 years McQueen has been a high school. Dalton teams won six state championships, including the 2008 title. McQueen defeated Las Vegas Palo Verde 13-12 in the finals. McQueen will open the 2009 season at Mackay Stadium in Reno, playing Arizona Division 5-A state champion Peoria Centennial Aug. 22. |
