The 13th annual Fiber Arts Show, held February 20-22, sponsored by the Pahrump Arts Council and produced by the Shadow Mountain Quilters, resulted in 45 cash awards and ribbons awarded to quilters and needleworkers in judged competitions.

Jane Bailey and her daughter, Kristen Stokes, chaired the show committee. Nearly 80 items were entered into the competitions this year.

The awards and recognition honor the artistry of the quilters and needleworkers and their dedication to learning and excellence, stated Bailey. "Every year, we think the artistry can't get any better, and then the next year, it does."

Judges awarded cash prizes and ribbons for first, second, and third place winners in thirteen categories. Other winners received special ribbons in Best of Show, Judge's Choice, People's Choice and honorable mention categories. "A minimum of three people must be entered in a category for judging to take place. All prizes may not be awarded in all categories at the judges' discretion," Bailey noted.

The grand winner of the day was Jan Pendleton, whose large quilt, "Friendship's Garden," featured quilt blocks with flowers appliquéd on a white intricately quilted background, winning a cash award, along with ribbons for first place, large quilt, "Best of Show," and second place "People's Choice."

Her small quilt, a round creation entitled "What Butterfly?" featured a colorful phoenix bird rising from jewel-embellished flames on a black background, winning a cash award and first place and "Best of Show" ribbons.

Carol Wertsbaugh won a cash award, first-place ribbon and "Best of Show" in the mixed media category for her first quilt, "Aquatic Neurotic," an imaginative crazy quilt embellished with embroidery and beads.

Joan Crim won the "Judge's Choice" ribbon in the small quilts category for her crazy quilt wall hanging.

The prestigious "People's Choice" ribbons and cash awards are based on the votes cast by show attendees for their single favorite entry. Snookie Beatty received a first-place ribbon and cash award for her "French Braid," a large quilt beautifully shaded from light colors at the center to dark at the outer edges.

Jan Pendleton received second place for her "Friendship's Garden" large quilt. Third place went to Marilyn Herbert for her "Wild Flowers" large quilt.

Mary Ann Sansom was the proud winner of the raffle quilt, made by the Shadow Mountain Quilters to support the building program of the Pahrump Arts Council.
